Many thanks slowhands for the information. I would be grateful for any information on the 1841 census as I have no details as to where William was born. Thanks again.

In general the 1841 only recorded born "in county" or "not" !
it might give a clearer indication of where he was living in 1841

A search of Christchurch Marriage Registers on this site gives you the following:
15 November 1845 William BROWN age 20, Collier of Christchurch and son of John BROWN, Collier married Arabella MARTIN, aged 18 of Christchurch and daughter of Richard Martin, Collier. Witnesses: James POWELL and Ann MARTIN
I am having difficulty in tracing a John BROWN match in the 1851 Census. There is a family nearby but they have an unmarried son William!
Living either side of William and Arabella in 1851 were:
All that part of the Township of West Dean comprising the Perch and Buckholt Inclosures, Cannop Chemical Works Vallets Level the North side of the Turnpike Road from Coleford to Little Dean, Coleford Lane End, Five Acres and New Thatch or Independent Pit

You will find Barn Hill Lodge searching www.Old-maps.co.uk for Coleford (Glos)and then click in the north east of the image to centre on Broadwell Lane End.
Enlarge the image and you will see Barn Hill Lodge and its field immediately below the "n" of Lane in "Broadwell Lane End". It is not marked as The Lodge but I lived too long in Broadwell not to know exactly where it is.
You could refer to previous messages (May last year?) about Barn Hill by typing Barn Hill in the search box of this message board.
Are you connected to one of the Brown families that lived in North Road, Broadwell in the 1950's? If so, and out of interest, which one?

Hi StA, and a very warm welcome to the forum.
Re Wynols Hill House, if you try searching this forum (see search box top right) you can find a few prior threads where it's mentioned, indeed it's possible this will work for yr Brown family queries too.
Ref the House, this website about the P.O.W. Camp 61 states it was demolished soon after WW2. These links are prob best opended in a new tab/window.

The above info was also mentioned in this prior thread

An Amos Brown is mentioned in the superb Lightmoor site's histories of two FoD pits near to Coleford, Speedwell and Union. The Union reference shows he was present at the disaster of 1902 which claimed four lives due to flooding.

Some of the above has already been covered in the aforementioned prior thread.
Hope this helps, Jeff.
