Yes, when you put it like that £1 sounds plausible doesn't it. And since it seems that church fees and vicar's fees could well have been in the region of £6, that would certainly have made it worth while. Indeed, it may well have been the only way marriage could have been at all affordable to a couple with minimal income and reserves.
