Now you mention it,there are several traces of gravel pits (i.e. deep, blue-green ponds) round our way and there's still a fuller's earth quarry down the road, so I suppose the landscape could well have been much more industrial then than it is now.

And, as you say, people have always travelled in search of work. This myth of everybody staying where their parents and grandparents lived really never was anything more than a myth.
