Cinderford Workhouse 1880 (General)
by unknown, Saturday, May 17, 2008, 07:04 (6043 days ago)
In my pursuit of William Oliver (born 1850 allegedly in Cinderford), I am trying to establish whether or not he was with his wife Catherine and daughter Susannah in 1880 when they were in Cinderford Workhouse according to the baptismal record of James Oliver. Is Cinderford Workhouse the same place as Westbury-on-Severn Workhouse? That seems to be the only one I can find so far; however the baptism record for James clearly states that he was born in Cinderford Workhouse. I'd like to try to find some records if possible, but that's not going to happen until I know exactly which set of records I'm looking for.
Can anybody help?
Regards,
Sian.

Catherine Elizabeth Hayes was baptised 25/7/1849 at Cinderford St.John's. The daughter of Arthur James and Catherine. It is with the family in Slowhands 1881 census that the two children are living in Newport in 1891.

I'm sorry. I obviously didn't express myself clearly enough. I know that James's baptismal record shows that he was born in the workhouse and by 1881 my ggrandfather was supporting the family (as he continued to do for many years); however, it doesn't necessarily mean that his father was there as well. That's what I'd like to check. I suspect that he may have cleared off before the baby was born. After all, by October he was in Portsmouth signing on as a Navy bandsman. What I'm trying to find are the workhouse records - if they exist.
Since, as you say, Westbury-on-Severn "supported Cinderford", does this mean that the records for the Westbury Workhouse would include those inmates housed in Cinderford?
Sorry not to have been clear the first time round.
Sian.

no the "Cinderford" inmates were in the Workhouse located in Westbury on Severn !
and the records are held in Gloucester
Gloucestershire Archives, Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester GL1 3DW. Holdings include Guardians' minute books (1835-1930 with gaps); Ledgers (1835-1930, with gaps); Officers' service register (1850-1930); etc.
Gloucestershire Archives have the following Goal record :-
1847
william oliver
U
Littledean Parish
Q/Gc6/1
labourer
Gaol
could be father ( or uncle etc) to William 1850

There were NO Olivers in the Westbury-on-Severn Workhouse in the 1881 Census.

Very interesting! Thank you, Slowhands. I shall have to organise somenone to go to the GRO to look at the records. Now that I can prepare a list of what they are looking for, we should be able to get some answers... with a bit of luck. I am also waiting for the National Archives to re-scan William's Naval service record. Then I shall know which ship he was on when he was invalided out of the Navy and THEN, with another bit of luck and no doubt a lot of digging, I shall be able to find out where he ended up in May 1895. So maybe, just maybe I'm almost getting somewhere! You never know your luck!!

On the 1881 census William appears as a Bandsman in the Royal Navy serving on the Inconstant.
By 1891 James appears to be with relatives in Monmouthshire.
