My ancestor was Alice Watkins - Mary Ann's sister. I was told that she emigrated but was unsure if it was NZ or Australia. I have no proof but anecdotally was told the following:
Mary Ann lived in Australis. Married name Everett (Everitt)? Her son married a Spanish girl who was Australia's champtionship bike rider.
Eliza Watkins lived in New Zealand and married ship's Capt Moore who sailed the UK-Aus-NZ routes.
I have never investigated into these parts of my family tree yet but please let me know if you can discover anything. i have a photo of Alice with a Spanish-looking girl (Romany looks)and this might be Mary Ann's daughter in law.

hi carol, pleased to here from you, all i know is she had a photo taken before she emmigrated, which since has been lost, my aunty corresponded, with a cousin of her`s from new- zealand, in the 1940`s, i can remember that myself.
if your relative is alice watkin`s, she was baptized, the same time as mary ann, 1865, this is certainly is a coincidence, perhap`s she moved to australia, later? can you give, me her married name, please.
on reflection!! i remember, my aunty telling me, that when they first emmigrated, they had trouble with the local tribe`s entering there homes, when the husband`s had gone to work.
if you think we are the same family i would like a copy of the photo, please.

hi again carol, it is pretty obvious, we are of the same watkin`s family, my grandfather was henry watkin`s, born, 1870 ruspidge, cinderford, i never met him he had died, by the time i was born, he was very friendly with his sister rossetta, and his brother charles, i remember aunt rose, she was a lovely person, and we visited her, rather a lot, she lived to be 95 year`s of age.
i see emily the younger sister, by the look`s of thing`s married in the forest-of-dean, also, as my grandfather, did.

Hi Brenda,
This is really exciting stuff, I didn't know Henry had any sisters. Rosetta makes a lot of sense as Alice Rosina was the eldest girl (my Alice). She was raised (I have no idea why) by her grandparents (George and Eliza Price) and appears on the 1871 census as living with them aged 10. I remember my great aunt Lily (Alice's daughter born in Castleford)telling me that Eliza would discipline her by hitting her head while wearing a metal thimble and Lily could recall Alice's head being covered with lumps and cysts.
Alice and Reuben Malson had the following children:
Alice Rosena b1883
Emily b1884
Edith b1886
Levi b1888 (infant death)
Lily b 1889 (infant death)
Reuben b1890 (infant death)
Lily b1891 (my great Aunt) who live just short of the 102nd birthday
Charlie b1893
SamuelAugustus b1893 (infant death)
Dorothy b1897
Reuben b1899
Beatrice b1900
William b1901
Ephraim b1905 (my grandfather)
Do you have any information on Henry's siblings, especially Rosetta as this name (or similar ones)crops up all the time in the family.
I will try and put the photo of Alice, Mary Ann and the Spanish girl on the FH website.

hi carol i am as sick as a pig, so to speak, i arrived home from australia last tuesday, and i was so near the emmigration offices, melbourne i cant believe it, where if i had known mary ann`s married name i could have got the relevant information, this is an excuse to go back, to ausie, with-out a doubt!
i have done the family tree, it`s brought up some surprises,my grandfather,s father died 1886, and sarah married again, you will find the marriage 1n parkend church 1992/93 to a john gardner, my grand parent`s were witnesses, to the marriage,( i am still jet lagged at present,) my grandparent`s were methodist, my family were baptised methodist chapel, and my aunty told me that when henry my grandfather came to s.wales he had a bible, which read, this bible is presented to henry watkins,by the methodist chapel in ruspidge cinderford, which is no longer standing, but i did go and see it before they knocked it down

Hi Brenda,
When you say Sarah married again to John Gardener, was she Thomas Watkin's wife?
I have Henry's parents as William and Lucy - am I correct?
Regards,
Carol

Hi carol, no william and lucy are not our g/grandfather`s henry watkins parent`s, i made the this mistake, of thinking, these were his parent`s, myself only because, i went by his age, on the 1881 census, so when i couldnt find 1861 and 1871, census, for this family, of lucy and william, i hired a family historian, and she found, that a henry was living in christchurch, on the 1861 census, and our henry, was married already, to sarah price, by then!!
if you can wait a couple of day`s, i will get my f.history, out as i put it away, when i went abroad, and i will send the information to you.
Have you found the marriage of sarah watkins, henry`s wife, to john gardner, yet? on the 1891 census, sarah, rosetta, and emily the youngest, is living near, llanely, in monmoutH, with john gardner, but of course they were`nt married, then. but that was short lived, he died, and on the 1991 census she is under the name of watkin`s again. it must be hard to take in i spent a couple of year`s trying to find them on the census, lucy watkin

I would be delighted to get some info on William and Ann and other siblings. I have been running with William and Lucy and was feeling smug to think I had everything going so well. that will teach me -
I have never had so many ancestors on different sides of the family who had children in and out of wedlock - I thought todays relaxed attitudes were bad (from a family history point of view) - my local registrar told me in 20 years no-one will be able to trace their families due to women having children to mulitple fathers, who then don't bother to record the fathers names.
regards,
Carol

Hi Carol, i did exactly the same thing, with lucy and william, but because i am so nosy, i really wanted to know where they lived in 1861,/1871, that was when i was made aware, `oop`s your looking at the wrong family, so it was worth getting a historian envolved, i like travelling to gloucester archives, but it can take so long, to get this information, i was a novice then.
We have had quite a few viewing`s, on this web site, and i have`nt, found out anything about elizabeth, the sister, born next to eliza, yet! but having advertising, yesterday, regarding mary ann, i was so pleased, with the information, you gave me.
