Many thanks. I have been totally unable to track down her christening, despite searches of the Monmouth records at the Gwent R O. But which church /chapel in Monmouth did the christening take place? William, her father, we know from her marriage record, was a maltster and the next stage is to trace his marriage and perhaps something of his work as a maltster - in Monmouth?

Sarah Ann POWELL nee BEAVAN nee SAUNDERS 1811 Monmouth
by Geoff Williams, Monday, May 26, 2008, 08:02 (6096 days ago) @ slowhands
Thank you for this information, although I have got most oif it - the main exception being the Banns details. As I noted originally, Sarah Ann's first husband, Samuel Bevan, died in Worcester - of consumption - in 1845 and she married again, but all but one of her children came from her first marriage. Any additional information that you can provide of this family will be most welcome. I am puzzled why, if a Monmouth girl, she married twice in the Forest. Was Samuel Bevan actually a Newland man rather than just living there (I could not find a christening for him there), accounting for her marriage in Newland Church, or had the Sanders family moved there from Monmouth? The St Briavels marriage to John Powell was presumably because Powell was living in that area and she had joined him - or had the Sanders family moved again?
Again, many thatnks

Would anyone have any idea why the name change from BEAVAN to BEAVER please?
There was a Walter Beavan also who married Alice James in 1871 and his name also later appeared in the census living in Fishponds in Bristol, under the new surname of BEAVER.
If anyone has any knowledge of this I would be very grateful please, as it seems really strange to me!
Best wishes to all.

I suspect its just simply how BEAVAN has been transcribed - nothing more sinister :-) hand written r vs. n
