TOOZE Whitecroft
by unknown, Thursday, October 21, 2010, 08:39 (5156 days ago) @ slowhands
Hi slowhands
William and Mary TOOZE had another daughter on 28 February 1844 at Whitecroft named Thirza (or Thursa). She married Charles Eli BOWDEN at St Paul's Church, Parkend on 2 June 1860. They were my great-grandparents through their first (of 10) child, Bill (not William, which caused me no end of trouble as even his family thought he was 'William'!)
I have learned a lot of extra details about the TOOZE family through this wonderful site and have found a burial reference at Newland for Mary TOOZE (Record ID 129185) which is a bit confusing. On this record it refers to a further 'memorandum' on Page 61, No. 482. Is it possible to obtain a copy of this 'memorandum'? It may throw some more light on this person.
Thanks again for a feast of information!

Thanks for that. Unfortunately it doesn't help to solve the mystery. It's rather complicated, but here goes!
My TOOZE research goes back to the marriage of Richard TOES to Mary CARRIER in Goodrich, Herefordshire on 25 May 1790. There are other CARRIER's in Goodrich, but no TOOZE. Richard and Mary had a daughter, Mary, in Goodrich in 1791 and a son, William, in Woolaston in 1802. I can't find any reference to Richard and Mary after this date. I think it's possible that Richard may have died as in the Parish Records on this site there is a Mary TOES, Widow marrying a John JAMES, Widower at Alvington on 11 April 1808. If anyone has a record of the death of Richard TOES it would be very helpful. Then on 29 July 1810 Mary TOES baptised an illegitimate child, John James TOES, son of Mary (no father's name?) at Lydney. On 25 December 1811 John TOES, 18 months is buried at Awre. On 13 October 1812 Mary TOES, Spinster married James EDWARDS, Bachelor at Awre. They appear to have at least seven children between 1815 and 1832. Then on 22 November 1819 Mary TOOZE, aged 27 is buried at Newland. Who is this Mary? Did she have the illegitimate child?
If this is too hard, perhaps someone could help me locate where Richard TOES came from. I think he may be connected to one of the few early TOOZE families in The Forest. Henry TOOZE and his wife Catherine were at Newland and in the 1861 Census Henry and family were living at 'The Lamb Inn'. According to the 1851 Census he was born in Hopworthy (?) in Devonshire. Does anyone have either Richard or Henry in their family?
A bit of a 'tall order', but you never know!

My Devon experience is light compare to the Forest, however Hockworthy would be my first candidate for Hopworthy.

Hi
Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you, but I've been away from the computer. Hockworthy sounds reasonable but I have done a bit more digging for Hopworthy and found that there was a village of that name near Pyworthy and Holsworthy, but by the 1841 Census it was reduced to a farm and a few cottages (which still exist), so I will have a look for parish records for St Swithin's at Pyworthy for possible TOOZE family members.
Many thanks.

TOOZE/TOES/TOWES - (more info from BANNS)
by m p griffiths , Tuesday, October 26, 2010, 08:28 (5151 days ago) @ unknown
There are quite a number of TOOZ etc on Ancestry from the Bristol area inc...
Richard TOOZ who married Mary MILLS - 9 May 1769, Bristol. Glos
I see on Richard's wedding transcription - it says JOES - with the old writing, the first initial obviously is difficult to decifer - which could lead to JONES etc. especially with the W in TOWES could be taken as an N - ??? there was a witness Sarah JONES - the Banns were also called on May 9/16/23 1790 - (married 25 May 1790) there may be more information contained in these. Banns were standard print out - with spaces left for the relevant information
For example : my x Grandfathers John WICKENDEN - Banns in Awre 8 March 1777 - gave both his age 22 years and also his wife's age 21 - and the Parishes they came from (married 9 April 1777 - Lydney)
also
John WICKENDEN (banns) - 18 Day of December 1811 - gave his age and his prospective Wife's age and the Parishes they came from. The marriage took place the next day - without age - just Batchelor/Spinster
If you use the Advanced Search (for Marriage witness - on this site) - and put in the name TOOZE etc - There are a number of TOOZE/TOES/TOWES entries)
inc
George BEACH married Abia LELDBATER - at Hundred of St Briavels - 2 August 1835 - witnesses: mark of William and Mary TOES
and
John JONES married Jane MATTHEWS - at Newland - 21 April 1813 - Mark of Henry TOWES (?) and Tho(mas) BOND
on the Gloucestershire Records Office and National Archives - there is this....
Henry TOOZE - Clearwell, Newland, Stonemason - 31 - 12 October 1827.
May be the family were Stonemason and travelled around.
Kellys Directory of Clearwell 1856 - Henry TOOZE - Stonemason
-----------------
Looking at the Gloucestershire Death Index - there is only one TOOZE - no TOES
Mary TOOZE (age 27) - 22 November 1819 - address Clearwell, age 27 wife of Henry ***

Amelia TOES - 27 February 1831, address Whitecroft - William (Collier) Mary - at Parkend St Pauls

Thanks for all that info, especially the details which show that the Mary TOOZE who died in 1919 must have been the 1st wife of Henry TOOZE. Mystery solved!
You are right about the problems with the surname spelling, but I hadn't thought of JONES. Where would I access the banns for Richard TOES marriage in 1790? Are these available on-line?
It's also interesting to see that the witnesses to the marriage of George BEACH and Abia LELDBATER (unusual name) were William and Mary TOES as Mary's maiden name was BEACH.
Your assumption that the TOOZE family were mainly stonemasons is also correct, as were the BOWDEN family they married into.
You have given me quite a few leads to follow, so once again, thanks.

Happy New Year to you.
