Thomas Herbert b. 1821 Tidenham (General)
by Jenna109, Monday, June 09, 2008, 12:38 (6020 days ago)
Thomas married Amanda Dibden in 1853. When she died in 1865 I am unable to find out what happened to their youngest children Elizabeth b. 1861 and Louisa Hannah b. 1864. The older children went to live with relatives.
I am also unable to find anything about Thomas Herbert's parents/birth. Does anyone know this family?

My "instinct" is that Thomas is a son to John and Sarah( nee DIBDEN) hence a brother to Jacob - Amanda's first husband - hence the mariage in Bristol (!)
if so then this transcription might be the missing record, slipping neatly between Philip and Jacob

Thank you so much for the information. I agree that Thomas is probably the son of Sarah and John Herbert - which would mean that Amanda married two brothers. I also agree that this could be why they married in Bristol. This, of course, would also mean that Edgar and Sarah who married in 1876 were first cousins. But, why didn't Sarah and Thomas baptise Thomas as they did all the other children?
Thomas really is a puzzle.

I think John and Sarah did in Jul 1820 - its just that the image is faded or damaged and the transcription has been too hard :-( (hence the Ghost entry I posted)
and Sarah who married in 1876 were first cousins
The Forest population was not that high, there are many examples of cousins marrying, some who may not have realised they were related ...

Thank you again - that certainly would solve the mystery. It would also answer why Thomas b. 1854 went to live with Isaac Herbert when his mother died. He was, in fact, his uncle. It was Isaac's daughter Sarah b.1859 who married Edgar b. 1856 who was the son of Thomas and Amanda. i.e. first cousins (is this legal?)

Somewhere I recall Henry the VIII having the Law changed to allow this ...

I agree that Thomas is probably the son of Sarah and John Herbert - which would mean that Amanda married two brothers.
From Archbishop Parker's statement of 1563, adopted as Cannon Law in 1603 and written into the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, the list of 'prohibited degrees' remained unchanged until 1907.
A woman was not permitted to marry her:
Grandfather
Grandmother's Husband
Husband's grandfather
Father's brother
Mother's brother
Father's sister's husband
Mother's sister's husband
Husband's father's brother

These rules could be circumvented by the parliamentary personal Bill procedure, though doing so may not be to everyone's taste. They have also been overcome by oversight or deceit, particularly between widower and deceased wife's sister, according to a Royal Commission in 1847.

Thank you - this is probably the reason why they went to Bristol to marry. I really do feel that Amanda did marry two brothers and the 'ghost' baptism record found by Slowhands is Thomas born to Sarah and John Herbert 16.7.1820.

Thank you. It certainly seems that this is our Thomas getting married again. This is what made me think he was the son of Sarah and John Herbert - butcher. I did check cousins marrying - no problem. Now I would like to find out what happened to Elizabeth when her mother died. I have found her as a servant in 1881 and marrying in 1882.
I also haven't located John born 1849 after his mother died. He is in the 1851 census living with Amanda and Henrietta but where in 1871? - tonight's work.
