Howell/Phelps (General)

William Phelps baptised 23 Aug 1846 Cinderford. Parents John and Elizabeth Phelps.
1851/1861 census shows William at home with his parents.

1871 census shows William moved up to Yorkshire.
William Phelps age 26 unmarried lodging in the household of Thomas and Jane Hale. Address: Synedale Pontefract Yorkshire.

1881 census shows William married to Mary.
William and Mary Phelps. This is where it get complicated.
Children of William and Mary are:
AAA Howell age 12 born abt 1869 Collaford Gloucestershire
Clara Howell age 5 born abt 1876 Castleford Yorkshire
William Howell age 1 born abt 1880 Castelford Yorkshire
Hannah Howell age 3 born abt 1878 Castleford Yorkshire
(Please note that the surname is Howell,not Phelps)
Also shown as living at the same address are:
Jas Howell born abt 1853 and Jno Howell born abt 1856, both Coal Miners

I found Mary at home with her parents James and Mary Howell, in 1871, Also shows child Alice (AAA?) together with Mary and her two brothers John and James.

Next census is 1891 where the childrens names have changed to Phelps. Mary has recently died.

1901 census is a mystery. The only one I could find was a william Phelps age 60 residing in the local Workhouse, but I am not certain it is him.

I was recently shown a record of marriage for a William Phelps and a Mary Howell June 1873 Monmouth vol 11a page 83 but not certain if this is correct.
Can anyone tell me if William and Mary did marry and what happened to William in 1901. Regards Jean Herbert
