by guidinglite, Friday, June 27, 2008, 12:57 (6002 days ago)

Hello,

I am presently researching John Townsend and his wife Elizabeth Howard B:abt 1768 and both died in Staunton, does anyone connect to this family including their son Thomas who was born in Staunton in 1798..

Other names noted are the Townsend wives maiden names in my branch..

Happy Hunting

Jim Patterson-Brewin.

Hiya Slowhands,

Many thanks for the information mate, as always a Gentleman and a Scholar:-) Looks like a transcription error may have occurred with Dovard (Howard) but the other marriage detail is interesting for sure?

Great to see you are still helping so many, you're and good man Arri Stottle:-)

Hello all,

Its been quite some time since I last researched on the FOD site due to health issues now better, but its a place of very fond memories like the new memories made by returning to the Forest for an impromptu family reunion in early June this year at Bream Pub, The Rising Sun Inn, a fabulous time was had be all:-)

Townsend, well, I did my best in the very limited time I had to visit many villages and churches on both sides of the dean but just ran out of time when in Staunton, Nr Coleford, Glos where I was researching my earliest known Maternal 4x Gt Grandparents John Towns(h)end B: c 1768, birth location unknown, but died 24 Dec 1835 in Staunton and was likely buried in the Staunton Parish Church, but sadly I could not locate a grave.

John's wife was Elizabeth (Howard or Doward) or something close and Elizabeth finished her life in Staunton in the old Alms house there passing away 21 Nov 1859, Born C1768 in West Dean from census records. They married 19 Feb 1798 at Staunton Parish Church.

John and Elizabeth had children as follows:
Thomas B1797, Staunton or Possibly Bolstone. D:Turnpike Gate, Ragmans Slade Farm, (today called Ragmans Lane Farm) Bishopswood I was there in June:-)
Elizabeth. B1800, Staunton, Glos
William B1803 Staunton, Glos
John B1810 Staunton, Glos

Over the years I have collected research trees but have never found a connect from my John and Elizabeth Townsend to his or her parents so with that I am reaching out in hopes that someone is actively research Townsends in the FOD area and perhaps can help me connect to the many older Townsend lines known please??

Any suggestions as to how I might access Monumental Inscription records for local churches, ie Staunton, Lydbrook, Holy Jesus and others close by or any BMD records for the area would be brilliant.

While in the Forest I met so many fabulous folks, and was in many great Pubs, Bed and Breakfasts and met so many helpful folks in churchyards as I madly stomped though the area in hopes of reconnecting to my Maternal routes and I just want to say thanks to all Foresters looking in:-)

Cheers Jim Patterson

Hi Jim,
welcome back, really pleased you enjoyed your visit last month !
Two quick questions to start,

1. Have you seen this cd-rom from the Glos FHS, it's said to contain M.I.s for some of the Churches you mention ?. Seeing as you were near Gloster so recently I do hope you DO have a copy !. I haven't used it so cannot vouch or otherwise for it. http://gfhs.org.uk/products-page/cddvd/monumental-inscription-2003-2/

2. To perhaps save revisiting old ground, can we assume you've already searched the PR database on this site, I've looked-up a couple of the BMDs you've quoted and it looks like you have seen the PRs here ?
Ditto the Bigland Transcripts ? http://www.forest-of-dean.net/downloads/index.php?path=Bigland_Transcripts/

3. Re Elizabeth's surname, the two(?) Marriage Records in this site's PRs don't seem to match your Howard/Doward name. Sorry if I've missed an old thread or somesuch, but please clarify your thinking here, are the PRs definitely in error ?

???

N.B: I've used Advanced search to try and find Baptisms PRs on this site for these surnames, or close fits, but sadly no luck yet.

I see Elizabeth was aged abt 30 when she married. This seems quite old to me for that time, have you considered this might be her second marriage hence wrong surname to search for her birth ?

Hoping to help you later,
Many thanks, Jeff

Hiya Jeff, great to reconnect again and thanks for the response to my post..

The CD, sadly I was not aware of its existence as I did not venture into Gloucester, just villages pertaining to my maternal Townsend line as I only had 3 days in the FOD. Lydbrook, Bream, Raurdean, Newland, Lydney, Parkend, Viney, Hill, Pillowell, Whitecroft, Staunton, Coleford, Bishopswood and a few others I cannot recall off the top I had been in the Highlands of Scotland for 3 weeks prior doing Genealogy re my main line so all very rushed sadly.

Re the Marriage, over time I have found various records with Maiden name of Elizabeth being Howard, Doward, Dovard, and Downs as you suggest but all have the same date which is quite odd until you read it says maiden name unreadable on the LDS, or IGI sites copy. So possibly a transcription error or a badly worn document perhaps?

Yes I have posted and received help from Slowhands or Aristotle in years past but I may have missed something as I am not so adept with computers since I became disabled.

Regarding the age of my 4x Gt Grandparents at marriage, I could be way off and that’s why I cannot locate details, but that said, they were Gardeners, farm labourers and often could not be in one spot for long or afford a family if like Scotland? So both being 30 could be correct or one or both may have been widowed perhaps..

The next younger generation Thomas Townsend was in Bishopswood working Ragmans slade farm as were some of his kids, until they became postal workers in Lydbrook, post master and deacon of the Holy Jesus at Lydbrook as time past.
All help greatly appreciated and I will contact GFHS re MI cd real soon, sadly Staunton is not on the CD though

Cheers Jim

Hi Jim,
quick reply to start with, shame you missed the cd, sounds rather like my infamous "skills" wrt bad timing / bad luck !. I think it does include Staunton tho, but the listing is missing a return key after StanleyPontlarge which is nowhere near Coleford. However I believe the listing is uptodate as a year or two ago I emailed them wrt one error where it listed a church thats not on the cd, the listing's been amended now, however you may want to ask them yourself to be safe. It's reminded me to buy my own cd as its a fairly regualr topic here.

Speak again soo, take care, Jeff

Cheers Jefff, I have written to GFHS to question whats on the CD and if they have MIs for Parkend, Bream, Staunton etc so we will wait and see, many thanks:-)

I guess what with illness and doing Scottish Family History for a good few years I have lost contact with whats what and how to get answers but I am sure its like riding a bike hey:-)lol

Cheers Jim
