Searching for information on my Gloucestershire ancestors surname MATTHEWS (my paternal Grandfather's name):
JOHN MATTHEWS baptised 15 July 1832, Hartpury. Married Mary Ann Maria Price of Knighton. His siblings were: Margaret or Maryanne; George; Ann; Jemima; Henry; Frances.
Parents: JOSEPH MATTHEWS bapt 27 Jan 1805, Hartpury. Married SARAH DAW bapt 10 Aug 1806, Hartpury. Married 13 Oct 1828, Hartpury.
Their parents:
JOSEPH MATTHEWS bapt 6 Dec 1767, buried 18 Apr 1841 aged '75'?, Hartpury. Married to HANNAH SIMS 19 Aug 1792, Hartpury. Sarah Daw's parents were RICHARD & MARY DAW.
Joseph's parents were I beieve: RICHARD MATTHEWS & MARY BURT, married 12 Oct 1761, Hartpury. He was a widower, both are listed as from this parish. Their children as well as Joseph were RICHARD bapt 23 May 1762 and MARY bapt 26 June 1763. There may be others. I am not certain that either was borrn in Hartpury?
An interesting note: In Hartpury graveyard there is a tombstone to the memory of CHRISTIANA MATTHEWS daughter of Richard and Mary Matthews, the date is possibly October 1753. So maybe she is the daughter of Richard's first marriage, also to someone named Mary?
Any information would be most welcome, and I would be delighted to hear from any distant relatives.

Christian(a) MATTHEWS d 1753 HARTPURY

According to the transcription of Hartpury MIs which I have, the stone reads:

In memory of Christiana the daughter of Richard and Mary Matthews of this parish who departed this life October the 27th 1753 aged near 6 years
'Let parents learn to be content
When God requires what is but lent
In youth nor childhood put no trust
For all must die that come from dust'

It was also recorded in Ralph Bigland's collection of 1791 together with the headstones of both parents (which presumably are now unidentifiable)as follows:

Mary, wife of Richard Matthews died 20 April 1749 aged 25
Christian their Daughter died 27 October 1753 aged 6
Richard Matthews died 7 March 1789 aged 77

Hope this helps

Mike

hello John, your message was interesting, i have been following my mothers side of the family.
Not knowing much at all after 4 years of searching i have eventually traced the Matthews family back to Hartpury, it seems that we have some of the same ancestors.
