Barnabas SMITH Born 1793 English Bicknor (General)

by aayres, Wednesday, July 09, 2008, 03:32 (5991 days ago)

Is anyone else researching the family of my great great grandfather Barnabas SMITH? Born 1793 English Bicknor, also died there 1853. His mother was Elizabeth Smith and I guess he was illegitimate as no father mentioned.Have looked at several Elizabeths but nothing proven.
I have full details of his marriage to Sarah Scrivens (a widow, previously Williams)and all his children, then down the line through his son James, his son Timothy, his son Horace... to me!
Any contact with the family would be much appreciated.

Elizabth SMITH m William PHILIPS 1794

Thanks for this - i had seen it before but thought it was just speculation. I'm just a beginner at all this - in your experience, will there be any way of proving these connections, or must it remain a guess? for example, if i looked at the original records at her 'mark' would it be distinctive and match anything on Barnabus's baptism record?

It is speculation , but you need to start with a number of possibles and start eliminating some or all !

This response will not assist you in your enquiry, but I could not resist making the connection. Barnabas Smith's wife Sarah who was Sarah Willings not Williams is my Great, Great, Grandmother. Her daughter Anne, born 3/5/1834, by her first marriage to Josiah Scrivens was my Great Grandmother. My Grandfather William Henry Scrivens must have been illegitimate as I can find no husband for Anne. She shows up as living with Barnabus and his family in the 1841 census.

How lovely, we share a great great grandmother! I did have Sarah as Willings at first but was advised that she was probably Williams - I love trying to picture these people, and i find Sarah very interesting. she must have had a hard life making ends meet, especially after Josiah died, and still seems to have been quite poor after marrying Barnabus. And all those children! I do have the 1841 census, also 1851 and 1861 showing that your great grandmother was still living with Sarah then, after Barnabus had died. Presumably the grandson William on that census is your grandfather? I would love to know what happened to them, and also if you have any information on descendants of the rest of the children, Scrivens or Smith.I suppose we are third half-cousins, if that relationship exists!obviously i can tell you about my Smith side, and will happily do so - you can email me direct on martandang@btinternet.com
