I am at a loss regarding my Gt Grandfather William Badham who lived at Walford.
From census I have his birth date as anytime between 1833 and 1839.
I have his marriage certificate, but this just states of full age.
A fathers name is not listed, does this mean that he was illigitemate?
He gives his place of birth on the census as Monmouth. I don't know whether this is the County or Town. If it was the County what area would it cover in the 1830's?
I have gone through most of the census but have no clue to his parents as I don't have an exact age and can't find any for Monmouth.
I do not know when he moved to Walford. He gives his residence on his Marriage certificate as Walford, that was in 1864.
I would be grateful for any help which may take me forward in my search.

Many many thanks for your quick reply with all the information.
I did not give it a thought that he might be adopted.
I am so grateful as I have been trying to find some sort of clue for about 3 years.
I wonder how the Baddam became Badham? I suppose as he couldn't write that it was entered by sound on the census. My mother was definately Badham(Born Ross -on-Wye)youngest daughter of William and Elizabeth's son Owen.

There was a James Badham christened at Dixton (Monmouth)1755, and others christened later in Monmouth, there were always Badhams in Monmouth when I grew up there, there probably still are.

Thanks Fred.
From the information that Slowhands posted he is an adopted son. How that came about Monmouth to Walford I really haven't a clue. He hasn't the name of his adoptive parents so probably wasn't a legal adoption? Especially in the 1830's.
I am thinking that perhaps he was illegitimate but why he was taken to Walford Herefordshire, I think will be hard to find.
I will try and find info on the names you have given me to see if there is any connection as his birth was before BMD registration.
Many thanks

In the latest parish register postings for Monmouth, I have found a baptism for a William Badham on 29th November 1833, Mothers name Anne Badham. ( no father)
This birth would seem to be right for his age (7) on the 1841 census, although in subsequent census his birth goes to abt 1834, 1835 up to 1837.
There is also a burial for an Ann Badham 18th December 1836.
I wonder if this is the same Anne? and whether this is how he came to be adopted by the Brown's of Walford.
Do you think I am right in assuming that the baptism is indeed my Gt Gt Grandfather?
This is the first clue I have found to his parentage.
