I have a mysterious great grandfather who claims to have been born in the Forest of Dean but I can find no trace of a birth for him anywhere. I wondered if perhaps school records might help. Does anyone know if there are any school records available anywhere for the FoD area please, including Sunday Schools? Many thanks.

Gloucester Archives has a large collection of school records http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/archives
and find your way to the online catalogue.
If you find a likely looking school you'll need to visit the Gloucester Archives in person to pore over what are often fragile log books and admission registers. Very time consuming unless you can pin it down to 2 or 3 likely schools!

Very many thanks for this. I will contact the Archives and see what I can find. You help is much appreciated.

My grandfather was George Wadley and I posted a message on 2.7.08 to ask if anyone knew of him. He claimed to have been born in the Forest of Dean circa 1852/55 but I can find no trace of him before 1881. There are a couple of other George Wadleys (one from Bristol and one one from Forest of Dean) but so far as I can tell, they aren't mine. He subsequently married in Bristol in 1888, lived in East Harptree and died in 1892 in hospital in Bath. Thank you for your assistance.
