Martha Harding & her dau Mary Ann 1810 Tibberton (General)

by martinphelps, Saturday, July 19, 2008, 05:45 (5981 days ago)

Can anyone help with further details of Martha Harding. All I know is that she had an illeg. dau. Mary Ann who was bapt. Tibberton on 29th July 1810.

Mary Ann reappears in 1845 in Hartpury as the mother of Henry John Phelps and the partner of John Phelps.

I am looking for any information about Martha and the location of both Martha & Mary Ann in the 1841 census.

Thanks slowhands. I have not found any clues from later records. Although the elusive John Phelps had me stumped for 20 years.

John Phelps was born in the islanded part of Pauntley (where his father farmed at Kews House) & bapt in the nearest church Newent in 1797. The age in the 1851 census is a 32/52 transcription error. In 1841 and 1861 his age is nearer. He never married Mary Ann Harding but she, as a spinster, went on to marry John Philips - just to confuse the genealogist wielding "Occams razor".

On the 1841 census Fanny Hooper is living with the Phelps family at Kews House, Pauntly. Fanny dies in 1859 and is buried with her father and one of her sisters in Twigworth (St Matthews).

Fanny, her mother and (some of her) sisters were born Pauntley/Newent. I would like to trace Fanny's parents but do not know her mothers maiden name. Could she have been a Phelps?

I know Elizabeth was born Pauntley c. 1794(census info). She married James Hooper, a malster according to a daughters 1851 marriage certificate.

Their children include Catherine bapt newent 5 Sept 1827, Hesther bapt Newent May 1831. There is also Anne and Emma also probably born Pauntley and possibly a James bapt 1820 who may be a brother.

Does anyone have any information about the Hooper Family and Elizabeth of Pauntley? Elizabeth died 1872. Per the census she was living with the family of her daughter Ann and Ann's second husband Alfred Drinkwater.

Just spotted your response to my original question - and at work so my memory may not be precise for the dates !

Fanny hooper is a grandaughter of Joseph Phelps of Kews House, Pauntley and daughter of James Hooper & Elizabeth Phelps.

James farmed at Hillhouse next to Kews according to the bapt records of his children (Pauntley & Newent).

James married Ann Phelps in 1818 (another dau of Joseph) at Hempstead & they both claimed to be from extra parochial Littleworth (a ruse to marry away from home ?).

Ann died in 1823 at 25 and shares the gravestone of Joseph in Churcham churchyard.

James then married Elizabeth Phelps again in Hempstead and he inherited Elizabeth's illeg dau Sophia Wood who was born at Kews House(not sure which Wood was father).
