Rev Thomas Rock Garnsey 1792-1847 (General)

by graham.simons, Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 11:08 (5976 days ago)

Thomas Rock Garnsey 1792-1847 was the incumbent in Christ Church to 1847. He had previously been a missionary in Sierra Leone. His funeral sermon was preached at Christ Church on Sunday 14th March that year, and his wife Mary Hare survived him. I am interested in tracing any children of the marriage; also whether there is a memorial to him anywhere. I have traced his Will which is unhelpful: he simply left everything to his widow. I’d be grateful for any feedback from anywhere! Many thanks.

When entering Henry Garsey into Google, there are numberous entries. It seems Henry was a Reverend and a botanist and translated botanical books into english.

In the Church Missionary Society Archive, Reel 81, C A 097 I found an entry for the 'Original Papers Missionary Thomas R Garnley 1820-1821'

Also I found a sample of a book 'Personalities of the Forest of Dean' Fineleaf Editions 2007, first published in 1863 where Thomas Garnsley has a whole chapter to himself. This was found at www.fineleaf.co.uk

Hi Graham

I am related to T.R. garnsey through marriage; I am descended from his brother-in-law William Ody Hare of Berkely Square Bristol and have a lot of information about the descendants of Thomas Rock Garnsey, and memorials to him. Please let me know any specific information you would like. Regards

Matthew

Brilliant to hear from you!

I believe I'm Thomas' 2nd cousin 3 times removed.....the family descends from the Garnseys of Uffculme, Thomas Rock and I both descend from John Garnsey 1710-58, and I have been in touch with Heather Garnsey of Australia who has also been researching. I've read a bit about Thomas' missionary work in Sierra Leone and also an account of his funeral. I've managed to follow some of Thomas' children but there are others of which I as yet know next to nothing. If I have it right, Caroline Sarah married William Henry Swayne and the marriage was childless; Henry Edward Fowler was an academic and died unmarried; Charles Frederick emigrated to Australia; Agnes Elizabeth married Charles Augustus Solbe; but of Robert, William Hare and Mary I know nothing - not even dates of birth.

Best wishes

Graham

Hi Graham

Unfortunately, I only have information on the Garnseys on a hard copy family tree which, typically, I cannot find at the moment! If you can give me a couple of weeks, I can dig this out and give you a gedcom document or pdf.

From what I can remember, you have it right regarding the children. Caroline had no issue and Agnes (d. 1927) had one son, Colonel Charles Edward de Lisle Solbe, b.1865.

Charles Frederick had, I think, 9 children who survived into adulthood.

I think that the other children all died in infancy.

Charles apparently emmigrated to Australia following an argument with his uncle, William Ody Hare, to whom, I think he was articled at the time.

Heather may already have tokd you all of this; there is quite a bit of information in Australia regarding the Garnsey offspring of C F Garnsey, mainly as his Grandson became Bishop of Gippsland, and one of his sons played cricket for Australia. There is some interesting family history in Bishop David Arthur Garnsey's book "A Man for Truth and Freedom", which you may be able to obtain her (Abe books are generally pretty good).

I don't think that I have seen the report of T R Garnsey's funeral; would you please email me a copy at matthew952001@yahoo.com? I have seen his grave in Arnos Vale as he is buried together with his wife and W O Hare.

I'll certainly let you have copies of anything I find.

Regards

Matthew

Thank you - I have sent a personal email with some more info. The funeral report is brief but he was clearly greatly respected.
