Hi,
I have Richard Hughes baptised 1781 died 1861 in my ancestry, I hadn't realised he had married two Elizabeths though. Unfortunately I couldn't find their marriage either. Was Hannah (baptised 12.6.1825) the second Elizabeth's child then? Sorry I couldn't be of help.

Hi Anne,
Hannah I believe was the first child of his second marriage to Elizabeth Simmonds. They married 6/07/1824.I am assuming and have no certificate back up,but if you look at the records for Lydney there are five children baptised 1813/1816/1818/1821 and 1823.There is a burial for an Elizabeth Hughes in 1823 and the death of a child Hannah born 1823.Then in 1824 there is the marriage of Richard Hughes and Elizabeth Simmonds.I have eight children down on my tree for this marriage.Unless there were two Richards but the age matches up with Richard born 1781.

Hi Karen,
I'd previously assumed that there were 2 Richards but I think you must be right. I've got six children from each marriage, I must have missed two from the second marriage. Are you descended from Richard's second marriage? I'm from Samuel (1818). I've got back to Thomas Hughes (c1708) and Anne Allender. Have you got any further back?

Hi there Hughes people

I have a John Hughes, sailmaker, with 2 daughters (only second survived) both named Catharine, bap in Monmouth 1825 and 1830. Wife Mary. Catharine 1830 my gg grandmother, and John also makes an appearance on her marriage certificate in 1852. I've been looking for ages on both sides of the Wye and banks of Severn, but no conclusive marriage or parents, though all too many possibilities, and the pesky chap seemed to avoid censuses. A long shot but as Lydney is a likely spot for sailmaking, have you any likely candidates in your trees please?

Thanks

Joss

1841 Wales Census HO107/752/1; Folio: 9; Page: 10

Borough of Monmouth, Parish of Monmouth
Monnow [?] Street Cock Alley 5

Mary Hughes - 45 - No
Catherine Hughes - 10 - Yes

This is the only Catharine/Catherine Hughes aged 5-15 that I could find on the England and Wales 1841 Census.

National Burial Index:

John Hughes
Burial Date : 8 May 1833
Age : 45
Recorded in : St Peter, Dixton Newton, Monmouthshire, Anglican (Parish Register)
Data Provider: Herefordshire Family History Society

Could this be your John Hughes ? It would explain why he avoided the censuses.

Hi Paul

Mary and Cartharine are mine and you might well have John! I note every John Hughes reference can find for checking later, and one of my most recent additions was this squinty eyed chap found on the The Regimental Archive Of The Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia)-

Hughes, John, Date of attestation: 1807-12-31 Place of attestation: Lantrechan Attested by: Principle
Place of birth: Monmouth Monmouthshire Age at enlistment: 19 years 80 days Occupation: Sail maker
Height at enlistment: 5 feet 2 inches Physical description: Complexion fair; eyes hazel squinty; hair brown; face round
Record of service: Transferred 01/04/1813 to 51st Foot
Notes: Height at 24 years 5 feet 4 inches.

If this is him, he was born 1788. AND the chap who you found buried also b this date.

I'm away from home right now with only the most essential info on my portable PC, but when I'm reunited with my full info next week, I'll look into this further. I noted a possible John Hughes bap with a mother Catherine (can't remember father offhand - but would go towards explaining multiple tries at daughter's name) in 1788 on Mike John's site, so looks as if this might indeed be my guy.

Thanks again

Joss

Well, well Joss, your ancestor was very likely at Waterloo (Hougoumont). 51st Regiment was in Peninsular from 1807. Coming forwards, were any of your Hughes relations in Royal Flying Corps in WWI? My mother's brother's wife was a Hughes. Her father flew Re2's in WWI and then for some time was chief engineer of Western Welsh Bus Co. I would guess he was late 60's in early 1950's.

Yes, I followed up on the previous clues and discovered that my John Hughes, baptised 20 Apr 1788 Monmouth s/o Wm and Cath Hughes, and buried 8 May 1833 in Dixton did indeed fight at Waterloo. Hoorah! And many thanks to all who helped me find that out.
In fact he spent 11 years from 1 April 1813 to 23 Nov 1824 in the army, but returned to Monmouth eventually with his health broken and with wife Mary in tow: she claimed on the 1861 census to have been born in Portugal, so that makes sense now - daughter of the regiment. No idea where, when, or indeed if they married but could have been anywhere in Europe and most likely not in FoD!
As that one likely to be impossible to solve, my current project in this neck of the family is parents "Wm and Cath" who remain elusive. They don't seem to have married in Monmouth so theories on either side of the Wye open for speculation.
I have recently been in touch with a descendant of the "posh" Hughes family of Monmouth, who seemed to monopolise the position of Mayor for several centuries. Members of the family were bankers, others owned Wye Trows and traded with Bristol. I don't think my Hughes were that well connected, but maybe some of the other folk on this thread link to this lot?
As to RAF connections, my John only had 2 girls, one of whom died, Catharine b 1830 being the survivor, so no flying chaps here! Although, I do have RAF connections in a quite different, Irish-Indian branch...

Anne

You refer specifically to Hannah Hughes. I have Hannah Hughes (daughter of Richard Hughes and Elizabeth Simmons) in my tree. Hannah married a Willam Cook from which a considerable number of Cook family later ensued. I then go down through Parry and Allsopp. Is there a connection
