John Aston & Jane Webb burial info required? (General)

by gill webb @, Thursday, July 31, 2008, 01:34 (5969 days ago)

I have this couple marrying at newland in 1807 and have 7 children baptised between 1809 & 1828.

In the Trevethin parish registers it states in marriage of Priscilla Aston to George Iles her father was John deceased, this marriage was in 1849. Jane (mother)was living with them in 1851 census of Abersychan a widow on independant means.

So John has to have died between 1828 & 1849, likely nearer the 1849, I cannot find this family on 1841 census.

There is no burial for Jane in Trevethin but one that matches her age for 1865 Christchurch abode given as Joyford Hill. There is also a burial for a John in 1859 age 80 also abode as Joyford Hill.

Could there be 2 families of John & Jane can anyone show any light on this puzzle for me please.

I am trying to establish who John's parents may be.

Best wishes.........Gill

Jane ASTON ( nee WEBB ?) living Joyford 1861

by gill webb @, Thursday, July 31, 2008, 04:33 (5969 days ago) @ slowhands

Many thanks for finding Jane in 1841 census I never thought to look for Ashton, or in Trevethan. So likely a widow by 1841, cuts the search down by 10 years. Although I am still puzzled who the John is, buried at Christchurch in 1859.

If any one has him in their tree, much appreciate info.

Best wishes and thanks again.........Gill

Hi Gill,

This is the line which I have for Harriett Aston baptised 20th February 1825:

RICHARD ASTON baptised 14.07.1745 married Susannah Evans 1750-1825
RICHARD ASTON baptised 03.07.1775 married Mary Dobbs c1772
JOHN ASTON baptised 14.09.1800 married Jane unknown
(John was born in Berry Hill and baptised at Newlands)
HARRIETT ASTON baptised 20.02.1825 married George Teague 1824-1860

Sorry I looked through all the John Astons and could not find one buried in 1849.

I would be grateful if you could email me as I only have the details of Henrys children in Trevethin and think we could share some more. regards Carol

Hi Carole

Thank you for your input, but have a difference of opinion reference Henry, there is no confirmed baptism for him, according to his marriage in Trevethin in 1839 his father is John a Timber Squarer. Harriets marriage in 1846 father is listed as Collier. From this I would deduce different fathers.

On 1841 census for Lords Hill, Coleford Henry is with wife Jane and 2 children, on same page there is a John Aston age 60 Squarer, this person may be Henry's father.

Hi Gill and Carole

Just in case it is of any use ...

I have this Henry Aston (?) as the son of John Aston and Elizabeth:

John Aston b 1778 (d Dec 1859 aged 80 at Joyford Hill) m Elizabeth b abt 1776 West Dean
(John seem to have been a woodcutter/carpenter/timer squarer)
Children:
Elizabeth c 11 Jan 1807 Newland
John Aston c 12 Nov 1809 Newland
Maria c 2 Jun 1816 Newland
Henry Aston No FoD info b abt 1819/20 (but son of John Aston, Timber Squarer, on his marriage certificate and living 2 doors away in 1841)
Hannah Maria Aston c 28 Jul 1822 Coleford (Dad John a 'labourer' rather than 'woodman' - but the name Hannah Maria is carried on through next generations)

Henry Aston b 1819/20, collier m Jane Brimbles Trevethin 13 Apr 1839
Children of Henry Aston
Mary Ann Aston b 1838 Abersychan
Thomas Aston b 1840 Coleford m Elizabeth Dagger 1866 Trevethin
Hanna Maria Aston b 1843 Abersychan m John Smith
Percella/Priscilla Aston b 1846 Abersychan m John Jones
John Aston b 1851 Trevethin m Jane Wayne 1869 Trevethin
Elizabeth Aston b 1856 Varteg

I was also interested in the John Aston m Jane Webb branch and tried to link them (not very successfully) to the other Newland Astons. There is a Monmouth death record for a John Aston (no age given)in Jan/Feb/Mar 1841 which would be just before the 1841 Census (taken June)when Jane is listed as 'Independent'.

Best wishes

Carolyn

Hello Carolyn

Thanks for confirming most of what I have been working on these past few days. I believe it is this John that is buried 1859 Christchurch abode Joyford Hill, not to be confused with the John I am actually looking for, just doing eliminations.

Yes I think this Henry is John's son. John married Elizabeth Smith in 1803, possible daughter of Henry & Jane Smith.

You missed John & Eliz first child Thomas bapt 1804 married Eliz Jones and is also in Trevethin & Llanfoist on censuses. Hannah Maria married Richard Fox, they also have spent some time in Trevethin.

It appears to be a very popular place for the Forest of Dean people.

Thanks again....Gill

I have Johh Aston and Jane Webb in my tree, but limited info on both at this time (only christening and marriage details). They are my Gt gt gt gt Grandparents through their daughter Hannah who married Edward Ambury. At the moment I only have names for 2 children - Hannah and John. Must look at census etc, to see if I can find the others which are apparently out there waiting to be added to my tree(once I've completed the work I am currently in the middle of on a different line). I can also go backwards from both Jane and John if that is of any use to anyone.

Don't know how to contact folk here individually, but am willing to if it's doable.
