Ida Maud GIFFORD (b. 1876 Yorkley) (General)

by hert0036, Saturday, August 02, 2008, 05:13 (5967 days ago)

Does anybody have any information about Ida Maud GIFFORD, born in Yorkley in 1876, apparently to Mark GIFFORD and Phoebe (MORSE) GIFFORD? I found a photograph, which I assume to be of the same person, on this site, so am hoping she might be part of somebody's family...

Specifically, I am interested in how Ida came to be living with a relative of mine, Harriet (THOMAS) JONES, in Liverpool. Harriet was born in Yorkley in 1837 to William and Priscilla THOMAS; she married an Irish prison warder, William JONES in Clifton in 1863, and when William got a job at Liverpool prison, some time between 1863 and 1871, he and Harriet moved up north. Ida appears on the census with them, age 4 in 1881, 14 in 1891, and 24 in 1901, described as their niece, b.c. 1877 in Yorkley GLS - but I can't work out a connection, so it may be that she wasn't a blood relative?

Ida married James MARTIN at Kirkdale St Mary (Liverpool) in 1905.

Thank you, Chris and Slowhands for your speedy replies and for the information!

So ... could the Harriet JONES who married Mark GIFFORD have been a sister to William JONES (who married "my" Harriet THOMAS), although her place of birth is Bristol, while his is Ireland? Hmmm... will need to think this one over!

Its possible if he is the younger brother, but the Harriet THOMAS from Yorkley ( wife of William JONES from Ireland) is more likely to be the Aunt ( blood connection)

The JONES Connection (1871 confirmation)

HI Hert0036,

I am new to this website, and have been trawling through the forum and found this link.

Mark Gifford is my great great Grandfather on my mothers side.. my grand mother was Ida May Gifford Born 1905 - her father was George Jonie(jones) gifford whose mother and father was Mark & Harriet. Afetr Harriet died Mark remarried a lady called Phoebe Morse.

I have a Gifford Family tree on the Ancestry website under Gifford tree...

I was lucky enough to hook up with a lady called Janet Rigby who is related to Phoebe Morse through her Great grandmother Damaris.. She had traced the Gifford Family tree back to 1605...

I have put in as much as i can into my family tree in Ancestry...

The unfortunate thing I have found is that the familys were large and they had children of the same name and they named their children the same names and some of them were born within months of each other....

Please take a look at my family tree..

If you have nay news on the giffords, I know my mum & Aunt would love to know.

Look forward to hearing from you

Sarah

Ida Maud GIFFORD (b. 1876 Yorkley)

by jerigby @, Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 21:39 (5487 days ago) @ hert0036

Hello Kirsty

Only just seen this message. Ida Maud Gifford was my grandmother's sister. My grandmother was Damaris Gifford and Ida and Damaris were two of the three children born to Mark Gifford and Phoebe Morse. You have probably seen their photos on this site. Mark was previously married to a Harriet Jones 1842-1874 and they had three children. I have been in touch with Ida's granddaughter and she says that Ida was fostered by an 'aunt who had no children' because their mother (Phoebe) couldn't cope and the foster father was governor of Liverpool Jail. I have only found this out in the last week or two. I couldn't understand why Ida didn't appear in the 1881 and 1891 censuses but I found her in 1901 in service at Liverpool at the home of her uncle William who was by now a widower.

I have also been trying to find the family connection, at first I thought William was a relation of Ida's fathers first wife Harriet Jones until I saw he was born in Ireland and Harriet was from Oldland in the Forest of Dean.

It seems very strange that Ida was given up at such an early age whereas the other children all stayed in the Forest of Dean. My grandmother also came up north to Lancashire.

My great grandfather Mark Gifford had three children by his first wife, Harriet Jones as follows:-
Elizabeth Jane Gifford in 1868, George Jones Gifford in 1870 and Millicent Clara Gifford in 1873. All three were baptised at Bream. Source: Parish Records

After Harriet died, Mark married Phoebe Morse at Parkend in 1875 and had a further three children Ida Maud born 1876, Harry born 1879 and my grandmother Damaris Maria born 1880. On the parish records I can't find a baptism for the last three children.
They all lived in Yorkley and I am wondering if there is a church around that area where the records have not been transcribed?

I did find a burial in 1899 for Harry in Viney Hill.

Is there any Non-conformity in the family ? If so this is probably why the Baptism records are "missing"
