PROUT/POWELL (General)

by mary5 @, Oxfordshire, Monday, August 04, 2008, 05:54 (5965 days ago)

My husband's family came from Lydney, the earliest being JAMES PROUT born about 1791 and who married ELIZABETH EDWARDS in 1816 at Lydney. Their son GEORGE born about 1821 in Lydney married AMELIA WILLIAMS nee ROBBINS a widow in 1850 at PARKEND CHURCH.

This family of PROUTS also used the name POWELL and sometimes a combination of the two. Has anyone any idea how this change of name came about?

I note that another member is researching EMMA PROUT the daughter of GEORGE POWELL PROUT who married ANN PREEST in 1836. This family I am sure is related to mine, perhaps the two GEORGES were cousins??

Mary,

How is the research going on George Powell (Prout) whose parents were James Powell & Elizabeth Edwards? Have you found James Powell (Prout) in the 1841 census yet? What about his other children (George's siblings).

I would be interested in hearing any new information concerning this family, as I believe James Powell (Prout) is my 4th great-uncle.

Hi

I haven't anything new re this family, Georges siblings were Ann 1817, John 1819-1819, George 1821 married to Amelia Robbins, John 1822, Sarah 1823, Margaret 1826?, Elizabeth 1826-1826 and Thomas 1830. Amelia Robbins had been married before to a Walter Williams and had a son George Williams who appeared on the 1851 Census with George Prout and Amelia and baby Elizabeth born 1850. I do not have any info about the 1841 Census.

The George Powell Prout who was born in 1817 was married to Ann Preest, I am trying to find the connection to my George Prout - perhaps they were cousins?

The family is very confusing with the changes in the name, but I am fairly certain the parents of George 1821 were James Prout and Elizabeth Edwards. James may have been the illegitimate son of a Mary Prout, perhaps the father was named Powell - hence the changing of the name.
