Can anyone help me with this one? A lady of my aquaintance mentioned an Albert Edwin Phelps, born abt 1895 Gloucestershire or China. His father was also named Albert Edwin Phelps but no idea where he was born, only that he was in Holy Orders and perhaps a Missionary in China at some point.
I do realise this is a long shot, with so little information to go on but perhaps someone out there has an Albert Edwin Phelps, Church Minister in their trees. Regards Jean

Brilliant as ever Slowhands. I have sent a message to my friend with the details you have posted and await confirmation that this is the correct person. The only other information I have to date is that Albert Edwin, the Missionary, had a son named Cameron Phelps,who was at some point made a Freeman of Gloucester. This information was sent after my initial post.
It would be interesting to find out more about the Rev. Phelp's mission in China, my friend said he "escaped back to England" during the conflict. I hope to confirm that we have the correct person shortly. Regards Jean Herbert

Thank you for your reply. As previously stated, this particular research is being undertaken for a lady called Rosemary, who is a descendant of Albert Edwin Phelps. I am involved in the search as we also have Phelps in our tree, both in Gloucestershire and Yorkshire, but at this point we do not know if the families are connected.
We are trying to find out who was the father of the Albert Edwin Phelps - the Clergy man who was a missionary in China. Slowhands was, as always, a huge help but one of the census he found is a puzzle. I believe it was the 1881 census, which showed an Albert Phelps, occupation dairy man, with two of his sons as "Painters". It seems to me that at the age of 18 the Albert Phelps shown on this particular census would have been in College studying for the Church. Can you shed any light on this mystery? Albert Phelps (I don't think it is "Albert Edwin", just plain "Albert") was a missionary in China and, subsequently, a clergyman in various locations in England. I have a lot of information about him including his own account of his work in China, photos and various inscribed books that he owned. I am happy to pass on this information but this forum may not be the best medium for that.

According to my research, Albert's parents were Edwin and Martha Phelps (nee Boughton). Alpert Phelps was born in Rudford in Gloucestershire in the UK on 14 December 1862. His father was at one time described as a gamekeeper
later a dairyman. Albert appears to have been the youngest of five children.
There is no record of his approach to the China Inland Mission (CIM) nor of the
background to this event but his acceptance by the Mission was followed by a
departure for China on 8 October 1884. According to the CIM records, he gave as the address of his nearest relative 5 Lower Westgate Street, Gloucester while his occupation is shown in the records as Decorator.

Albert was ordained priest in 1890 while he was in China by Bishop Moule.

I am currently working on Edwin's ancestors so any light you can shed on those would be helpful. Also anything you might have on Freemen of the city of Gloucester would be useful. Albert was a freeman of the city as was his father Edwin. What did this mean and how can I investigate earlier generations of freemen?

The freedom of the city of Gloucester was controlled by the city corporation and was obtained in one of four ways: by patrimony, apprenticeship, fine or gift.

Most entrants qualified by patrimony (because his father was a freeman) or by apprenticeship (because he had completed his 7 year apprenticeship to
a freeman in the city). This entitlement was usually automatic, originally without payment but later incurring a fee of 4s (in 1534).

However, there were times when the freedom was granted with the council's permission. A man could be granted freedom by fine (by purchase), if, for instance, he had served the city loyally (e.g. during the siege of Gloucester) and the council were happy for him to become a freeman, or perhaps he had married into the family of a freeman. Many of these were innkeepers. By the 17th century, the council had the power to make freemen by gift. It used its power to create a number of honorary freemen from outside the city, many for political purposes.

The above information is taken from the introduction to 'A Calendar of the Registers of the Freemen of the City of Gloucester, 1641-1838' transcribed by Peter Ripley and revised and edited by John Jurica, published by the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society in 1991.

How can I get hold of a copy of that book, 'A Calendar of the Registers of the Freemen of the City of Gloucester, 1641-1838' ?

Albert Phelps was made a Freeman of the City of Gloucester in July 1892 and was "admitted by his fathers copy".

Albert's father, Edwin, was made a Freeman of the City of Gloucester in July 1847 and was also "admitted by his fathers copy".

Presumably Edwin's father, William Phelps, a farmer in Rudford, was also a Freeman of the City of Gloucester but it is here I get stuck. Would your book allow me to go back and back?

Are the Registers of the Freemen of the City of Gloucester available on-line anywhere ?

I believe the Edwin Phelps who m. Martha Boughton 1853 was son of William Phelps & Mary Lewis and bapt. Rudford 1826.

William was bapt 1790 Rudford son of Thomas Phelps & Mary Draper & married 1813 in Tibberton.

I think this was Thomas who was bapt 1759 Taynton, son of William Phelps & Esther Young 1759 & ? m. Mary Draper 1782 Gloucester. Thomas had a younger brother Joseph bapt 1771 who is my ancestor.

William m Esther Young 1754 in Gloucester, but he was from Taynton & she was from Bulley. I haven't traced his birth (the Taynton records are a bit muddled around 1728), but I think he comes from a line of 3 further William Phelps in Taynton.

There are lots of interesting records to flesh out these bare bones !

Thank you for the information. My main interest was the Phelps/Herbert marriage in Gloucestershire then on to Yorkshire. I am now helping the descendants of the Rev. Phelps trace their history, in the hope that somewhere along the line our Phelps and theirs connect. Not looking good so far, ours seem to be more in the line of Coal Miners - the other branch landowers but it is early days. I'm just starting to research my family tree and Albert Phelps appears to be my great great granddad. You mention that you have information that he wrote about his time in China. Is there any way that you would be able to provide me with that and any other information you have.

I've not had chance to speak with my Gran yet (Albert's granddaughter), but I'm not sure how much she knows and I'd love to be able to fill her in on some details.

I was very interested to discover this thread after signing onto this forum. My mother's great grandmother was Eleanor PHELPS who was a daughter of William PHELPS (Farmer of Rudford) & Mary (nee LEWIS) of Tibberton. I have only just begun researching this branch of the family and your post was of great interest as my mother as a young girl in Gloucester remembers Albert PHELPS distinctly and described him as a Missionary who had returned from China and was dressed in Chinese dress and had pig tails.

Eleanor PHELPS married John PALMER of Prestbury and they lived in Cheltenham. Their daughter was Rosina Sophia PALMER (great grandmother) who married James Wood COLE of Gloucester. The COLE's were painters & decorators in Gloucester. The house survives in St. Aldate Street. In fact the only house on that side of the street that was not demolished.

I should be very interested to learn more of Albert's life and also any photographs would be great. I am happy to share what little information I have.

I needn't tell you what a small world this is.
Today I was replying to an email sent to me via this web site, from a person connected to the Boughton family.

So as it is fresh in my mind; Martha Boughton was the daughter of John Boughton born 9 Aug 1778 Churcham & Sarah Pearce born 1798. They married 7 Dec 1818 Mitcheldean and had 9 children including Martha. John Boughton 1778 was the son of John Boughton & Martha Young. They married 19 Jun 1778 Churcham and when John died 23 July 1795, Martha remarried to Stephen Wadley.

John Boughton 1778 had a brother Joseph born 29 August 1779 Churcham, he married Mary Thomas and they had 5 children.
