Gypsies in the FoD during 1800s (General)

by squillysmum, (6326 days ago)

Found a note on the parish records (burial in 1873 in Drybrook) saying Ambrose Dickson was a gypsy living on Plump Hill at time of death. As he is my direct line I would like to pursue this further.

Any ideas how to research a gypsy line with Forest connections?

Thanks very much for this link - looks excellent (and a severe distraction from the work I currently have open around me!) :-)

I look forward to many hours of digging.

DICKSON / DIXON Gypsies in the FoD

by slowhands, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, (6326 days ago) @ squillysmum

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=7388

is an example of moderate success tracking one such family.

Whilst the enumerators were suppose to "capture" the details of those camped in the Forest, my guess is that they did not in all cases - we can speculate as to why :-)

Edmund DICKSON / DIXON 1846

by squillysmum, (6325 days ago) @ slowhands

Looks like you have found me a brother to my Sophia (Daughter of Ambrose)! She married Charles Barnard, but was born in Chosen - persumably in the vicinity of the hill - and so doesn't appear on the Forest site.

you do get the sense of what "travelling" meant .. Painswick,Churchdown, Blaisden, Worcestershire, Caerleon - following Seasonal work / harvests and doing pots/pans, knife sharpening ? ( sorry ifthat is too stereotype ! )

there are also DIXON's in Stow - a classic area for Gypsies and the horse fair...

May be there are more on the FOD site under DIXON.

Gypsies in the FoD during 1800s

by prubery, (6237 days ago) @ romany_star

I am also researching a gypsy HOSKINS/HODGKINS/HODGKISS family, Esther HODGKINS was buried 2 Mar 1888 at Drybrook, residence Lea Bailey (thanks to this wonderful site). Her son Noah was born 14 Jun 1867 at Spetchley, WOR, and his father was given as Thomas BOSWELL, Chair Bottomer and Knife Grinder.

Would love to exchange information with you.
Kind regards
Polly
