What a fantastic resource! However I am struggling to get started on my fathers side. My grandparents Lennard and Dorothy Jones lived in Grahamston Road Sedbury when I was a child in the 1950's and 60's. My father Leslie Jones always said he went to school and to church in Tutshill. Dorothy was from Tutshill and her maiden name was Jones. Lennard was born in Tunnel Cottage in Tidenham. My father remembered visiting both grandmothers (Granny Tutshill and Granny Tidenham). My grandmother died in Coney Hill Hospital, perhaps 30 - 35 years ago. My problem? I can find no record of their BMD's, no mention of Tunnel Cottage anywhere. Dad had several brothers and sisters, Marjorie died aged 34 - cant find any record of this. Dad has gone now but his one surviving brother doesn't remember a thing - birthdays, anniversaries etc. Can anyone out there help me please. On my mothers side Iam doing well, probably because I spent all my childhood holidays with my maternal Granny in Pwllmeyric and learned all about her childhood and siblings. I know absolutely nothing about Dads side but would love to find out.

Hi

I suspect the challenge is that some/most of the records you seek are "too" recent to be published here; from about 1920 back you may find your tree, however more recent names/events are considered sensitive.

more than happy to try to help - keep watching :-)

a long shot but this branch may be in your tree

Tidenham Tunnel, Netherhope -> Dennel

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Monday, August 18, 2008, 01:10 (6013 days ago) @ marywilliams

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/206067 - south entrance
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/202474 - north entrance

There was a house at Netherhope by 1655, and a stone house and a cottage stood
there by the mouth of the railway tunnel in 1969

In 1876 the Wye Valley Railway was completed, branching out of the South Wales Railway
at Sedbury and passing through a tunnel 1,188 yards long from Netherhope to the banks
of the Wye below Dennel Hill. There was a station near Churchend and halts at Tutshill
and Netherhope, which were closed in 1959.

Tidenham Tunnel, Netherhope -> Dennel

by marywilliams @, Chepstow, Monday, August 18, 2008, 08:29 (6012 days ago) @ slowhands

This is brilliant - I found the overgrown entrance to the tunnel yesterday! The house that stands there now seems fairly recent but its fantastic to know that this was where "Granny Tidenham" lived. Thanks so much.
