James Godsell b. 1762 Dymock and Mary Hodges b. 1768 Dymock (General)
James Godsell (b. 1762), Dymock and Mary Hodges (b. 1768), Dymock, Gloucestershire
I am trying to solve the conumdrum of which Mary Hodges married James Godsall in Dymock in 1790.
Esther Godsall, born Dymock 1795, is the g-g-grandmother of the writer. She was the daughter of James and Mary. Note Esther is sometimes spelt Hester and known variants of Godsall through time are Godsal, Godsel, Godsell and Godsawe.
Dymock Parish Register transcripts record the marriage of James Godsell to Mary Hodges in Dymock on 14 October 1790. One of the two witnesses was Hannah Hodges.
The same transcripts also record the marriage of Mary Hodges to William Ring (b. 1754) of Colwall in Dymock on 17 August 1792. “Ring” is believed to be a mispelling for King based on the evidence of his will, proved in 1798. One of the witnesses was Thomas Hodges.
There is no record of James Godsell’s death or burial on the Forest of Dean Parish Register transcripts in the intervening period and a Thomas Godsell was born to
James and Mary in Dymock in 1800 suggesting that the pair were still very much together.
Mary, Hannah and Thomas Hodges were all born to William and Hannah Hodges. However there were two consecutive generations of William and Hannah Hodges in Dymock, the first, nee Hill, married in Dymock in 1741 and the second, nee Taylor, married in 1765. Both generations included a Mary, Hannah and Thomas among their children. Mary Hodges born Dymock 1768 was a child of the second William and Hannah (nee Taylor).
Mary Hodges, born Dymock 1751 to William and Hannah (nee Hill), spinster married Joseph Stephens, bachelor of Redmarley Dabitot in Dymock on 20 November 1777. Joseph died and was buried in Redmarley on 17th August 1790
Finally a James Godsall was buried, aged 70, on 10th July 1826 – at the time of his death he lived at Leddington in Dymock Parish.
Any pointers to which Mary Hodges married James Godsell gratefully received.
Thank you
