James Harris Popes Hill (General)
by jweeks13, Thursday, September 25, 2008, 03:32 (5914 days ago)
Hi
I am trying to find marriage, birth, death etc of James Harris 1857 dont't know who too. He then went on to have my Grandfather Sidney Harris (dob 1901) and again any details would be great. Sidney had a sister Rose Harris (first or second women to join Police in London I believe, and poss other siblings Elsie and Law (not sure of spelling).
The James mentioned aboth had a father called James Harris (dob abt 1829) and mother Harriet Harris (dob abt 1788) and his mother was called Sarah Harris (dob abt 1788).
I believe they all came from Popes Hill area. All information on all of them would be great if possible, hope I'm not asking for too much.
Many Thanks
Sidney Harris grandaughter

Many Thanks Bertha for information on Harris's.
I would now like to trace James Harris' (dob 1856) Marriage and Buriel. I had a look on the parish records and have a few option but not sure. Would the Record ID no help and how would I use it, or this this something you could do for me?

Sometimes you need to go forward before you can go backwards!
You say that Sidney was born in 1901, and he had a sister Rose and possible other siblings.
Would you know if Sidney was the oldest child, and if so what order would Rose and the other children come in? Depending on what month in 1901 Sidney was born in, you may be lucky and find him on the Census.
As far as I'm aware the Record ID number is just for the Parishes own reference, but perhaps someone else could confirm that for you as I'm not really sure.

Hi again
I have the 1861 and 1881 census which has matched with the info you have given me so far. Up to James Harris 1856. But haven't got past that yet apart from a photo of Sidney (my grandfather) and Rose (his sister) in her police uniform and some of Sidneys Army records.
I just emailed a cousin to see if he know which month Sidney was born in and what order him and his siblings were born. I let you know. I know when Sidney got married he was in Bristol but the rest of his family were still Pope Hill.
Thanks for your help so far.

Some good news
Sidney is indeed on the 1901 census 0 years of age.
so here goes
James Harris 43 Collier in Pit
married to Eliza Harris 41
daughter Elsie 11
Leonard 9
Rose 7
Albert 5
Emily 3
Sydney with a Y 0.
Now I'm confused because we all though it was spelt with a I as it is on his Army record. And this info would make James born in 1858 not 1856 as on the baptism info, any thoughts?

As far as James birth year is concerned, on the Census they usually put that the person is born 'abt' (about) 1856 etc so it's quite usual for someone's birth year and age range to vary from Census to Census.
As far as the spelling of Sydney/Sidney is concerned the Ennumerator writes down what he hears, and spells the name as he sees fit.
Researching is not an exact Science if it was it would make life a lot easier for us all!

Thabnks for this information, it looks possible.
AS far as the SIDNEY HARRIS 1901 (my grandfather) situation, I have have is Army records which give his DOB as 1901 which fits with the census 1901 saying is was 0 years of age. But I cannot find a birth entry for him. Any ideas please. His father was James Harris abt 1858 and his mother Eliza Belcher abt 1860.

Did you find that on the Parish Records search, as I'm unable to find it there.

No, that was the government birth registration on FreeBMD:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
The Parish Records are baptisms (which sometimes also state the date of birth).
I can't see Syd on there. Might have been non conformist? Or non believers!

Next Harris problem
by jweeks13, Sunday, September 28, 2008, 06:56 (5911 days ago) @ ChrisW
Many Thanks, sorry I'm not very knowledgable about these thing!
My next problem is James harris's (abt 1829) wife Harriet maiden name(abt 1830).
The only record I can find is Record ID 37214 where a James Harris (with his father James Harris) has married a Harriet in 1856 and she was 20 and he was 24 so it doesn't add up with the dob's.
Hope you can help.

Based on what has been said I think I can take it that James Harris marriage to Harriet Clutterbuck is quite possible. I now need to find James's Mother (Sarah abt 73 in the 1861 census) husband.

Thanks for info.
The mother of James is definitely called Sarah. I have her on the 1861 census aged 73 as head of the family with James aged 32 married to Harriet aged 31 and there children James aged 4, Mary Ann aged 2, Albert aged 3 and George aged 24.

Hi, I live on Popes Hill and have Title Deeds to my house showing that it belonged to your relations. I also have a copy of the will of James Harris deceased dated 13.4.1892 .
I also have mortgage deed dated 30.12 1870 with James Harris's mark on it ( he obviously could not read or write ) it is merely a cross.
You are more than welcome to contact me for any more information
