Barn Hill Pit (General)

by emilyellen @, Wednesday, October 01, 2008, 01:23 (5908 days ago)

According to the 1851 and 1861 census my ancestors on the Hale side have an address shown as Barn Hil Pit. Was it usual for coalminers to be living with their families at a Coal Mine? Another family of Coal Miners on the same census pages have an address of Barn Hill Saw Mills.
Where is, or was, Barn Hill Pit and is there access to any remains?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Barn Hill is just a little east of Coleford

Go to the following web page, then to the "Map" link, enlarge the map which shows Coleford and you will see Barn Hill.

My sincere thanks for your advice on how to access the information regarding Barn Hill Pit, with luck I may be able to pursue my search for why my Collier ancestors were living there on my next visit to The Forest.
