BAYNHAM Newland and Aston Ingham (General)

by Frank Baynham, Sunday, March 06, 2005, 07:56 (7200 days ago)

I believe I have traced my BAYNHAM ancestry back to Aston Ingham, Herefordshire.

I have discovered Thomas BAYNHAM who married Mary c1748.

They had 4 daughters, Mary b1749, Elisabeth b 1752, Alice b 1754 died the same year and Nancy b 1756. All born Aston Ingham.

Mary could have died giving birth to Nancy as Thomas married Hester WELLINGTON 19/1/1756.

They in turn had 4 sons and 1 daughter; Thomas b 1757, John ( my 3 x g grandfather) born 1759, Hester b 1760, William b 1765 d 1766, George b 1767, all again Aston Ingham.

John BAYNHAM married Sarah WOODWARD at Aston Ingham 29 Mar 1789 and they had James (my 2 x g grandfather) c 1808 who married Elizabeth ROSSER in Newland.

They had at least 7 children including my great grandfather Richard BAYNHAM who was born in Littledean House of correction (mum was doing 2 months hard labour for stealing bark from the Forest)

If anybody can add anything, or would like more information, please get in touch.

Hi Frank,
I have had little success with my BAYNHAM research but admit that I looked mainly in the Bristol area.

My interests are THOMAS BAYNHAM b Abt 1760 married August 3rd 1789, St James, Bristol to ELIZABETH HILL b 1764, and their daughters ANN b Abt 1794 and HESTER b Abt 1801. Each of these girls married brothers ROBERT and WILLIAM SMITH in Bristol, who are part of the direct line of my Grandmother.
It was your mention of the name Hester that caught my eye. Hardly a common name at that time - or was it?

I hope there will be a match of some sort with your information.

Thanks

Hi Maureen,

I've had some pretty spectacular results in the past few weeks and can now trace my male line back to Ralph Ap Eynon, 1306, and if I follow his wife Joan De Dene I can go back to the Norman Conquest in 1066.

In all that time though I haven't found a Bristol link.

I think it's fair to say that sooner or later every Baynham should be able to find a link to Ralph Ap Eynon, so keep plugging away. It's taken me 8 years.

Good luck,

Frank, Forest of Dean

I come down of that line too. I come down through Thomas b.1422, his son Alexander b. 1443.

I have a link to some useful information if you are interested.

There is a strong belief that the "Ap Eynon" family are from Mitcheldean,
and later this anglo-welsh surname became BAYNHAM

You will find BAYNHAM and BAYNAM in the Forest of Dean in 1851, however no EYNON family appears there.

Hi Frank,

I'm a bit confused and hoping you can help. You have James Baynham as the son of John Baynham and Sarah Woodward. I'm having trouble locating a baptism record for a James born to those parents and wondering if you could point me in the right direction please.

Thanks
Judy

There are a number of baptisms at English Bicknor of children born to John and Sarah BAYNHAM as follows:

Year Surname First Name Fathers Forename Mothers Forename Event Parish/Chapel More detail
1817 BAYNHAM Mary Ann John Sarah Baptism English Bicknor More detail
1819 BAYNHAM James John Sarah Baptism English Bicknor More detail

1825 BAYNHAM Mary John Sarah Baptism English Bicknor More detail
1826 BAYNHAM Eliza John Sarah Baptism English Bicknor More detail
1832 BAYNHAM John John Sarah Baptism English Bicknor More detail

However the marriage is most likely to be this one:

The Aston Ingham marriage took place in 1789 and there does not appear to be any baptisms at Aston Ingham of children born to this couple.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your feedback.

These children would be "too late" to be children of John Baynham and Sarah Woodward. They married in the 1788. The children listed are from 1815 and on.

James Baynham who was listed in the original post as their child was born about then but I can't see a baptism of a James to John and Sarah in the 1788-1790 time frame. The marriage would be in the approx right timeframe but I havne't been able to find anything else to link James to them yet so was wondering what others had found that did link him to them?

His age varies from the 1841 and 1851 UK census but based on his death cert and the 1841 UK census the birth of about 1788-1790 would be about it.

I can only see a James Baynham born to a Thomas and Elizabeth in Hasfield 22 Jun 1788.

Regards
Judy

The original post is rather old now but, just as a comment, it appears that Mary Baynham died giving birth to Alice rather than Nancy,
