Hello i am trying to locate my fathers side of the family and wondering if the rowles family name rings a bell with anyone on here, i know alot of family were baptised and born round viney hill and lydney area, any help would be greatly appriciated.

excellant that is my family line, but what i am hoping for is post 1901 members i have been told bout but i cant find any records of them, the names osbourne and goff or goth keep being mentioned by my dad but cant seem to trace them. I have been trying hard to research the people you mentioned, and have bits and bobs on my great grandad herbert rowles, but he seems to disapear in the 1891 census replaced by his brother then reappears in the 1901 census, is this a common thing in geneology? i am very new to all this and struggling like hell.

The Lydney area of Gloucestershire tends to come under the Chepstow Reg district, so thats where I started on FreeBMD , and there they were :-)

Hi Martin, I just found your thread and hope I can trace more before age and memory brings it to a halt. My grandmother was Hilda, as a child we used to visit Percy at Viney hill that would be back in early 1960's. I remember a Sam living there but not sure the connection. Hilda was married to Stan (my grand father) and they lived in Trethomas which was then under Monmouthsire but now Cearphilly. Hope this can help you

An exceptionally brave man;

"Arthur Herbert Rowles died aged 30 from gas poisoning in the Second Battle of the Somme of 1918. While serving with the 5th Heavy Artillery Group as a gunner, he was awarded a Military Medal for his actions in saving a member of his gun crew. He dug him out of a trench after he was trapped by debris, which had gone through the other man's arm. At the time they were being bombarded by German artillery."

i have found an edith rowles born and died 1885 i am trying to prove if this is from my line of the tree, i believe it to be herberts first daughter but cant prove it is, although not born in the region this website covers (registered highworth volume 5a page 17) i know they lived in that area then, but wanna prove she is related. how would i do this??, same with a gilbert born and died 1895 this time registered in chepstow 11a 14.
