John PARTRIDGE, 1795

by joss, Monday, October 13, 2008, 08:02 (5896 days ago) @ slowhands

This John Partridge was one of the Partridge dynasty of ironmasters. I've looked into the family a (very little) bit as this guy's steward was my gx4 grandfather Esaias Pewtner around the time when JP had a forge at Lydbrook and built a mansion at Bishopswood. The family went on to involvement in the emergent iron industry in S Wales and were related by marriage to the Crawshay and Bailey families, who between them produced the notorious Crawshay Bailey. As to forebears, there were several Johns and although it seems a bit of a stretch from ironmonger to ironmaster, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a link.

You might be interested in the following book:
"The Original Directory to the Royal Forest of Dean 1870". The book is, in fact, a diary kept by James Thompson, aged 18, who was born at Lords Hill House, Coleford.

I believe this is the book which I saw at the Gloucs Records Office in 1992. It includes references to many people of interest.

Not entirely sure it is this book which holds a specific reference to this family of Partridges on page 379. (the perils of rushing while travelling)

It refers to Edenwall property. A conveyance dated 1886 makes reference to John Partridge's sons). If you're interested I could transcribe the section which relates.
