My Uncle Lewis Jessie James Jenkins died in The Wilderness of Diphtheria in 1935
Sounds very Biblical, can anyone tell me where The Wilderness is

Plump Hill is my serious answer :-)
the building was being used as an "isolation" type Hospital at that time, now...

The Wilderness was a former mansion of a local industrialist, then became an isolation hospital.I was a patient from November 1939 to February 1940 with diptheria and scarlet fever but fortunately survived.A younger cousin was not so lucky.
The building is now used for education.

.....and just in passing....
I read somewhere that the word wilderness is a corruption of 'wild deers nest'.
Feel free to discuss!

from my 2004 posting on Rootsweb
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ENG-GLOS-FOREST-DEAN/2004-11/1100936249
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cbennett/abenhall1927.htm
refers to the Wilderness as the isolation Hospital
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23259
referred to the Wilderness or Hill house and its use as an isolation
hospital.
referring to the manor at Abenhall
The manor is now divided, being the property of Mrs. Davies, of the Wilderness (originally Wild-deers-nest), and Charles Barton Esq.
