William READ who was married to Esther PHILLIPS (General)

by anvil58, Friday, October 17, 2008, 15:49 (5892 days ago)

I am trying to trace back from William READ who was married to Esther PHILLIPS, they were married on the 9th of March 1868 at St Johns church in the parish of St Johns dean parish, the certificate states that his father was David READ it states that william was 21 years of age at the time of marriage so that would put him being born in about 1847

Looking at the 1861 Census:
David Read head 34
Caroline wife 33
Sarah ann daughter 15
William son 14
David son 8
Alfrd Son 6
Enoch son 4

William READS age seem about right plus with what seems to be the correct father?

What i need to know is David READ the son of Richard READ & Sarah TINGLE?

Also i cannot find any marriage entry for David and Caroline READ i would be very interested in finding out her surname??

I would be most grateful for any help or feedback on this matter..

Thanks :)

Hi Slowhands and Anvil58

As ever when slowhands gets to work on a posting, I gain some more information, in this case adding some census and baptism detail I didn't have previously. I cannot add much except that as per the detail I submitted to the posting that Slowhands has provided a link to; the parents of Francis Read 1730/1783 who married Jane Stephens were Francis Read & Margaret. They had 11 children, Margaret 1722, Anne 1724, John 1726, Jane 1728, Francis 1730, James 1732, William 1735, Elizabeth 1737, Richard 1741/1742, Richard 1743.
Of these children I have links from Francis 1730 as per this posting, James 1732 who married my 1st cousin 7 times removed Sarah Meek. Richard 1743 who married Margaret, they had 3 children John 1783, George 1785 & James 1788. Son George 1785 married Ann Brown which started the name variation Read Brown, Brown Read & just incorrectly Brown. They had Richard 1814 & George 1828, there are no doubt more but I haven't found them. Richard 1814 was born Dudley, Staffs which may be why I haven't found more, he married Fanny Dubberly and had 9 children and I have links from many of them. George 1828 married Jane Tingle and had 11 children but I only have links (so far) from daughter Elizabeth 1850 who married James Bennett.

I wonder if this is your Richard ( future husband of Fanny D) or the one who shows in 1851 as married to a Sarah in Wolverhampton ?

Hello Jim Ashton,

Thank you for that information, Thanks to Slowhands and yourself i have learned so much, i wish that i found this site a lot sooner'
I shall be sure to add Francis and Margaret to the list.
I wonder were down the line that Sarah TINGLE and Jane TINGLE are relatd?.

What first interested me in Ancestry was a surname my mother mentioned that belonged on her mothers side who i knew came from Cheltenham but i was very surprised to learn that my grandfather's side originated from the Forest of Dean, having had a few very enjoyable holiday's at whats now Bracelands camping site along with my parents and grandparents i now often wonder if my grandfather ever knew this was where is roots were for it was a surprise to my my mother and her siblings when i mentioned it to them.

Thanks again for the information :)

Hi Anvil

It is quite possible that Sarah & Jane Tingle are related. It is for this reason I usually add siblings and parents of spouses to my family tree as subsequent information can sometimes prove a relationship with these connected people.

As slowhands has documented, the parents of Sarah Tingle 1780 are James Tingle and Ann. The parents of Jane Tingle 1828 were William Tingle and Elizabeth.

Hello Jim Ashton,

Thank you for the Tingle names it will be interesting finding out how they link up together.

About adding the rest of the family to the tree, yes i never thought about the benefits before you mentioned it,i shall do the same thing myself in time..

What i'm interested in knowing,is when looking through the ancesters in the parish records at what point are you satisfied that a portion of the puzzle fits? for instance: I have Caroline HARRIS with parents William Harris and his wife Lydia, after searching the records my gut feeling tells me that Lydia was a JORDAN before becoming the HARRIS in my family tree but i'm not sure though this record looks the likely candidate to me????
It's the same with Caleb PERKINS,when i searched the records i had no luck but when i used the soundex the name CALIB appeared along with parents Jonathan and Eliz who were in CLEARWELL the dates seem possible but yet again i'm not one hundred per cent sure? so what am i missing??? as you can guess i'm fairly new to all this :)

Thanks for the input :)

In the case of Caroline Harris and David Read, you are lucky that the marriage has taken place after 1837, therefore you can apply for a certificate, based upon the information that Slowhands has provided, this will confirm her fathers name and occupation, then look at the 1841 Census, using the fathers name. You may get lucky and have mother in law living with them or you may find the witness names at the marriage revealing.

Hello!

Just a note on the JORDAN issue: there is certainly an 1821 Newland marriage for William HARRIS and Lydia JORDAN, and there are two 1826 English Bicknor burials for the name Lydia HARRIS: one aged 26 (April), the other 6 months (September). See therefore also the 1800 English Bicknor baptism for Lydia Jordan, daughter of Richard and Mary.

I can give you a bit more detail on this family if you'd like.

Best,
Rebecca

Am I safe to presume that the Ann, wife of James and mother of Sarah, was Ann Drew who married James Tingle on 5 Feb. 1780 at Littledean?

Hello Arriano,

Yes thats the conclusion that i have come to, it does look like Ann Drew was Sarah's mother.

Is there a connection??

Excellent. Well, that takes me back a couple of more generations. I think that James Tingle who married Ann Drew is the son of James Tingle and Sarah Hobbs.
