Bilson House, Bilson Green, Cinderford (General)

by poppybat, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 12:04 (5896 days ago)

Hi All

I've been trying in vain to find a photo / image of Bilson House, which was occupied by members of my family in the late C19 - early C20. Unfortunately I believe it was demolished in 1973. I've located it on old OS maps, and it looks like an interesting building. Can anyone point me in the direction of a book where I might find a photo of it?

Many many thanks in advance

Paula

Hi Poppybat
I may be mistaken but I seem to remember my father working in a house opposite the old gasworks in Valley Road Cinderford when it was being used as offices for Northern United Colliery. This was in the late 50's early 60's. I am 80% sure this was Bilson House. If that was the case then a bit of research into Northern United might reveal something and sincere apologies if I am wrong.
Is there anyone else out there who can confirm this?.
Dave

Thank you all for your replies. The Bilson House that is listed now is in about the right place but from what I've read isn't the same building. I suspect it may be a replacement, or at the very least a surviving portion of the old house. Maybe I should contact the company that's listed as occupying it now and ask them...

I know the house was taken over by the Coal Board after nationalisation (the previous owners, my family, were mine owners). I have got a whole series of old maps showing the location and shape of the building, and it's such a weird shape I thought it would be interesting to see it.

I'll certainly follow up all the leads you've given me. Many thanks again!

My friend Jack Roberts lived at Bilson Offices, the former Coalboard Offices.
he informs me that Bilson House was in fact demolished around the time you
specified, shortly after he had moved to the Offices. Apparently Bilson House
was just along the site to the north. The site is now where Oaklands Sports
Arena is situated.

Thanks! At least I know now for certain that it's totally gone.

I'd still love to see a photo of it - can anyone recommend any local history books which might have a photo in?

Hello

I came across your entry from 2008/2009 re Bilson House. I was wondering if you ever found any pictures of Bilson House in Cinderford. I have just started researching my husband's Goold ancestors who lived there I think in the early to mid 1800s. Aaron Goold was a part owner of a nearby colliery Bilson and Crump Meadow.

I would love to see any pictures you may have come accross or if you have any more information you wouldnt mind sharing that would be great.

Best Regards

Heather
