Would like to contact 'Helena', g grandaughter of Woodman Adams, brother of Alice. No user name of 'Helena' now appears on this site. I believe the Alice Adams in the photo of Viney Hill School recently put on the website is the sister of Woodman Adams, half sister of my grandfather Albert.
Could you confirm this. Is she also the Alice that you said emigrated to America?

I am interested in this one because an Ann Mary Addams/Adams married one of my relatives, Charles J Rook and emigrated to Poughkeepsie in New York in the late 1840s or early 1850s. I have a photograph of her and her son, Charles. I am wondering if there might be a connection. If the city in the state of New York was Poughkeepsie they are likely to be related also if their religion was R.C. I know that the Rooks kept in touch with them for at least 50 years, - a later branch of the family was going to emigrate to the USA to live near them at the turn of the centuary but decided not to go there at the last minute. If your Adams' are related to these please let me know as I have quite a bit of information on them. which I have given to the public library in Poughkeepsie.
Thanks.

Hello again Jackie. Yes, Alice Adams was the sister of Woodman Adams, daughter of Dinah and Robert Adams and niece to Albert Adams senior. Alice married Timothy Smith and emigrated to America where they had two daughters before Timothy's tragic death, I was thrilled to see the photograph of Alice which you posted on the forum Jackie. Alice and her two daughters are mentioned in Dinah's will. Dinah's second marriage was to a George Llewellyn. I believe they first lived in Furnace Bottom, previously housing Dinah, Robert and their family. Dinah and George then moved to Viney Woodside and took Alice and Bessie with them. Woodman, being the second eldest son, married Sarah Elizabeth Hale, they initially lived in New Road, Blakeney prior to moving to the family home in Furnace Bottom, some time between 1910 and 1914, when Dinah married George, their house was the last house on the left at the end of the lane, now Furnace Valley; I remember many fond trips as a child to the Forest from Cheltenham with my grandmother, Hilda Anice nee Adams and I recall visiting the house. I can provide more details of Woodman's family if you so wish. Albert senior and his family lived at Pitching/Pigeon Green, any idea where this was Jackie, I always thought it was in Furnace Bottom but I'm a bit confused over this?

was your grand mother Hilda's mother (Sryphena) Elizabeth nee Morse?
My g grandfather was Charles Morse son of James and Annis and Elizabeth's sister.
If so i would be grateful if you have any information or photos of them. I still have family in the area and have recently visited Awre and Blakeney church yards.

According to the parish records, Hilda's (my grandmother's) father Woodman married a Sarah Elizabeth Haile/Hale on 7 July 1894. Thereafter, records referring to the baptism of their children infer that she preferred to use her second name Elizabeth; however, I have been trying to find a connection with the name Morse. Speaking to my father, he naturally remembers many family visits to Furnace Valley and remembers Hilda and her sisters referring to a 'Granny Morse' who lived on Blakeney Hill, you could see her house from Furnace Valley.....can you shed any light on this for me, I've been trying to find out who 'Granny Morse' was for ages as Dad is unsure? But the parish records refer to Elizabeth's maiden name as Hale, perhaps her mother married again and she adopted her mother's married name Morse??
Looking at Sarah Elizabeth Hales's age at time of marriage to Woodman and Elizabeth Morse's baptism date, age dates don't seem to tally?? But I believe there's a definite connection somewhere between the Adams and Morses on Blakeney Hill!

Hi
I am descended from the Blakeney Hill & Viney Hill Morse's. So far I haven't come across a marriage to a Hale or an Adams. As Woodman was living at Viney perhaps 'Granny Morse' was a courtesy title for a neighbour? If you do find a connection I'd love to know about it!

Helen
This would all need checking but i found Sarah Elizabeth Adams burial 11/12/1902 in Gloucester General Inf aged 42 from Viney Hill.
In 1901 married to a Woodman Adams but no children.
Then in 1903/4 a Woodman Adams marries Elizabeth Morse.
In 1911 census a Woodman and Elizabeth Adams have been married 7 years with 3 children Gwen, Elsie and Hilda.Living in New Road, Blakeney. So perhaps that is where the Granny Morse connection comes from.

Thank you so much Jackie, that all makes sense now. The family were unaware that Woodman married twice, I've just telephoned Dad to let him know and he was thrilled to sort the mystery of 'Great Granny Morse who lived on Blakeney Hill!'
It also explains why Woodman was well into his forties before their first child, 'Great Aunty Gwen' appeared in 1905! Woodman and Elizabeth had 7 girls, Gwendoline, Elsie, Hilda, Florence (Ethel),Nance, Mary and Dorothy and one boy James (Jim). I remember them all apart from Jim who died before I was born.

I always wondered where my Grandmother Hilda's middle name Anice originated. Good to find out that it was her grandmother's christian name although it doesn't seem to have been spelt the same way, Nan always spelt it with a 'c'. Thanks for carrying out the research everyone...would love to see a copy of Woodman's and Elizabeth's wedding certificate Jackie.

Hi,
Looked up Pitching Green on Inet, found it on Streetmap between Furnace Valley and Viney Woodside on the map so it seems all ref to places on family Parish records and census returns refer to the same area. Postcode ref GL15 4DQ will give you the map .
