Annie Grail's Marriages (General)

by petrina @, Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 09:45 (5881 days ago)

I am wondering how many times Annie Grail born 1855 Alvington married.I understood that Annie & her husdand James Ednound (Edward) Dowle, brought up two of her neice's Ethel & Doris Spicer, my Grandmother's sisters. On this site I found that Annie married James Legg 27 Feb 1876 Lydney parish. James died Aug 1890. Annie married John Dowle 31 Dec 1902 Lydney Parish. I looked on 1901 census for Annie & found Annie Legg 44 Head, widow living Aylburton Village Star, living with her were James E Dowle 25 widower Boarder, Eliza Graig (should read Grail)Mother, Davis (should be Doris)Spicer 4 neice born Ledbury & Thomas Watkins, don't think he's anything to do with family. How come James was living with Annie 1901 & 31 dec 1902 she married his brother John. Did John die & Annie later married James, did she marry him or just live with him & everybody thought they had married as she had the Dowle name from John.I have been trying to find John's death & marriage of Annie & James, & their deaths.James was widow to Ellen Collier

Hi Petrina

The James E Dowle on the 1901 was aged 25. Annie was 44. He is listed as a boarder, so that's possibly all he was. Perhaps Annie was doing John a favour by taking James in after his wife died?

Ayleburton 1901 census entry

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 20:54 (5881 days ago) @ petrina

As transcribed by Ancestry
1901
Annie Legg abt 1857 Alvington, Gloucestershire, England Head Aylburton, Gloucestershire
Eliza Grail abt 1828 Aylburton, Gloucestershire, England Mother Aylburton, Gloucestershire
Donis Sfnier abt 1897 Ledbury, Herefordshire, England Niece Aylburton, Gloucestershire
James Dowle abt 1876 Aylburton, Gloucestershire, England Boarder Aylburton, Gloucestershire
Thomas Wathins abt 1874 Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales Boarder Aylburton, Gloucestershire

What I think is recorded
1901
Annie Legg abt 1857 Alvington, Gloucestershire, England Head Aylburton, Gloucestershire
Eliza Grail abt 1828 Aylburton, Gloucestershire, England Mother Aylburton, Gloucestershire
DORRIS SPICER abt 1897 Ledbury, Herefordshire, England Niece Aylburton, Gloucestershire
James Dowle abt 1876 Aylburton, Gloucestershire, England Boarder Aylburton, Gloucestershire
Thomas WATKINS abt 1874 Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales Boarder Aylburton, Gloucestershire

Ayleburton Village "Star", on closer inspection is "Mar" crossed out, I suspect when the Census book
was being written up someone started to enter Mary in the wrong column.

Which bride?

There are probably two couples listed on the page, and there is no way of knowing which one he married unless you purchase a copy of the marriage cert.

Yes I knew that Aylburton was with Lydney. Want to find out is not yet on the site. I want to find when John Dowle born 1876 died & when Annie Dowle (Legg nee Grail) Married James E Dowle. Both would happened have been after 1902. Annie & James brought up two of my Grandmothers sisters, their Grandchildren told me his name.

I suspect you are moving to dates that are considered "private" or beyond those transcribed so far - 1905 for Lydney marriages. ..
