The baptism of William Jenkins at Newland on 9th May 1823 shows the father as William Jenkins and the mother as Elizabeth James.

I can find no other baptism record for this period that list the maiden name of the mother does this indicated that the father and mother are not married?

Hi Tony

I have come across that with my family but they were married.
I suppose it's a bit like birth certificates that give both parents names.

Sorry I should have said I cannot find a marriage between William Jenkins and Elizabeth James.

I believe Elizabeth James married a Watkins in Oct 1823. The child adotpted his step fathers name and can be seen living with an Emmanuel James on the 1851 census.
