The Primitive Metodist Chapel Ellwood (General)

by tonyjenkins @, Saturday, November 08, 2008, 10:04 (5871 days ago)

I have a copy of the marriage cretificate for Elizabeth Jenkins and George Baldwin married 19th March 1853.

The marriage is not recorded in our marriage records

The residence of the bride is Cleverend Green.

I would like to know:-

1. Where is Cleverend Green?
2. Where was/is the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Ellwood?
3. How long was the Ellwood Primitive Methodist Chapel open for?
4. Did the chapel perform the full range of Baptism Marriages and Burials?
5. Does the chapel have a cemetry?

Your help would be appreciated

Kind Regards

Tony Jenkins

From British History Online:

Q3. Within the Forest the Primitive Methodists built a chapel between Pillowell and Yorkley in 1835 (fn. 51) and another at Ellwood in 1841.

The Ellwood chapel was retained as a schoolroom in 1876 when a new chapel was opened to the west. Services in the new building, known as Providence, were attended by 230 people in 1879. (fn. 65)

Hi Tony

The Chapel is opposite the Primary School in Ellwood (2 miles from Coleford) and it was still in use in the 1970s 1980s when my children attended the Sunday School. There is a small cemetery there.

Tony,
The Methodist Chapel in Ellwood is still there ! and holds a regular Sunday service. The Chapel was built in 1875 to replace a smaller one which then became the (Sunday) School room. There are two graveyards, one attached to the Chapel and an older one between the Chapel and the former schoolroom (now privately owned). No records of the original graveyard exist as far as I know. There is a record of the memorials and some unmarked graves in the 'new' graveyard, it was recorded by members of fod family history some years ago. The first burial in the new section was in 1914.
I believe some baptisms that took place there were recorded as being held at Lydney.

Tony,
I think Cleverend Green is the area now known as Clements End (Green) which is about a mile from Ellwood.

North-west of Bream a few, mainly industrial, buildings were put up from the 1840s in the
Oakwood valley near an ancient corn mill in a detached part of Newland parish. (fn. 82)
Further west at Clements End, near the south-western boundary of the Forest, there were
several groups of scattered cottages by 1787. (fn. 83)
One group, in the areas known in the 1820s as Clements Tump and Cleverend Green, (fn. 84)
comprised six cottages in 1834 (fn. 85) and was represented by the 16 houses recorded
at 'Elwall in 1851. (fn. 86) It included a nonconformist chapel from 1869.

Elizabeth JENKINS 1838 Mill Hill

by tonyjenkins @, Saturday, November 08, 2008, 21:26 (5870 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi

The marriage certificate states that Elizabeth is the daughter of George Jenkins, Quarryman of Cleverend Green.

I believe George to be related to the Jenkins family of Clearwell through John Jenkins b 1765 (s/o William Jenkins b 1733 and Elizabeth Doward). George the s/o John Jenkins b 1796.

Due to missing parish records I am struggling to confirm my Jenkins family connections.

Shortly after Elizabeth Married George Baldwin I believe he was admitted to Gloucester Asylim.

Our records idicate that there are two John Jenkins in the area, both probably linked to William Jenkins b 1707 and Elizabeth Pritchard if and how they are linked I cannot establish.

I would appreciate some guidance if you have time.

Kind Regards

Tony Jenkins
