Elizabeth MADDOX baptized 1851 Christchurch (General)
by ellieperry , Monday, November 10, 2008, 13:55 (5868 days ago)
Thank you Tony.
Elizabeth MADDOX was baptized 11 OcT 1851, her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth MADDOX. Elizabeth married Thomas Thomas , my gggrandfather (see Thomas Baynham THOMAS in the Forum)in 1870, then the widow Thomas married Henry James POWELL in Sept of 1877.
Any connections?
Also forgot the surname BAYNHAM,Frances (Baynham) Thomas was Thomas's mother.

Yes, Elizabeth Maddox bapt 11 Oct 1851 is definitely related. My wife's gg g-f was Thomas Maddox, Elizabeth's father. We can go back just one more generation to John Maddox (believed born Bredwardine, Heref. 1769).
Where did Elizabeth Maddox marry Thomas Baynham Thomas in 1870? I can't find anything on FreeBMD or F-O-D parish records.
Also where were James Powell and Elizabeth Thomas married [FreeBMD Jul-Sep 1877 Monmouth 11a 66]? Again, nothing in the F-O-D Parish records. There are 2 christenings, Lillie Powell(1880) and Philip Henry Powell (1882) at the F-O-D Bible Christian circuit for a James / Elizabeth Powell which you probably know about.
James Powell (son-in-law) was present at and informant of Thomas Maddox death on 18 Jan 1881.

Hi Tony,
I found Elizabeth MADDOX in the FOD parish records in Joyford-Christchurch. I have also been in contact with a grand-daughter of Elizabeth. She lives in Edge End. She told me Elizabeth had two children with Thomas THOMAS, my ggrandmother Susan Thomas and Edmond Thomas, I haven't been able to find Edmond THOMAS. Then she had five more children with Henry James POWELL:
Elizabeth-1878
Thomas-1879
John-1880
James-1886
Harriet-1888
My ggreat-grandparents James and Susan (THOMAS) BOURNE/AMBREY immigrated to Seymour, IA in 1903 upon the invitation of Peter THOMAS who was the superintendant of Sunshine Mine.

The (IGI) 1881 census for the Barracks, West Dean is interesting as it has the following entries for 2 adjacent dwellings:
James POWELL Head M Male 31 Crickhowell, Brecknock, Wales, Wood Man
Elizabeth POWELL Wife M Female 29 West Dean, Gloucester, England
Susan POWELL Daur Female 9 West Dean, Gloucester, England
Edmund POWELL Son Male 7 East Dean, Gloucester, England
Elizabeth POWELL Daur Female 2 Berkly, Gloucester, England
John POWELL Son Male 1 West Dean, Gloucester, England
(and the household next door)
Elizabeth MADDEN Head W Female 68 West Dean, Gloucester, England, Colliers Widow
Susan THOMAS G Daur Female 10 West Dean, Gloucester, England, Domestic
My interest has been in Elizabeth MADDOX [which was mis-transcribed as MADDEN on the 1881 census above]. She was born Elizabeth WEBB, and was the widow of Thomas MADDOX who died in Jan 1881, and mother to the Elizabeth MADDOX bapt 1851 at Christchurch. Grand daughter Susan THOMAS, from the THOMAS/MADDOX marriage is living with her. Elizabeth MADDOX died in 1889 aged 81 (she can be found on the FOD Parish Record site under surname MADOX).
If you look at the POWELL household, it would appear that the children are in 2 batches: I think that James Powell had married previously and that Susan and Edmund are from James' first marriage. Whereas children Elizabeth and John are probably from James' 2nd marriage in 1877 to Elizabeth Thomas (nee MADDOX). The Thomas POWELL you mentioned born 1879 appears to have died by 1881.
Do you know where & when Elizabeth (Maddox) THOMAS / (Henry) James POWELL married?
I live near the Forest of Dean and know Edge End well. I hope the above is useful, and I would welcome any leads you can to provide on the MADDOX line.
Tony

I don't think Thomas Powell born 1879 did die in 1881!
He was my grandfather and lived until 1950 something 53 I think - i need to check my file. His daughter still lives in Edge End

James POWELL and Elizabeth THOMAS marriage
by Tony S , Sunday, November 30, 2008, 05:17 (5849 days ago) @ Helen Dickerson
Helen,
Do you know where your great-grandfather James POWELL & Elizabeth THOMAS were married, and was James a widower at the time?
If your grandfather Thomas POWELL was born in 1879, he would have been 2 at the 1881 census. He doesn't appear to be in the household at the time, although two other children (Elizabeth age 2 & John age 1) are. I've not been able to find John subsequently, so assume that possible "Tom" may have been mis-heard by the enumerator as "John" [see message above of November 11, 2008, 21:47].
I'd be interested to know where & when Elizabeth POWELL (nee MADDOX) died if you have that info.

I have been trying to work out why tom is not there in the census for months!
Your answer is not beyond the realms of imposibilty.
As my grandmother kathleen tinton died when my father was only 3 or 4 years old , much of our knowledge is either missing or unreliable. My father was moved to live with another relative away from the family. I will try and answer your questions if I can. James Powell and Elizabeth Thomas (maddox) were married in Lydbrook. They give Bachelor and Spinster although I know she was a widow! My aunt in edge end thinks that james was previously married.

Henry MADDOX was born in 1812 in West Dean, and was baptised on 12 April 1812 in Lydney Parish Church. He married Mary Ann JAMES on 28 March 1840 in the Parish of Littledean.
Henry's parents were John MADDOX born about 1769 in Bredwardine Herefordshire, and Susan(nah) JONES probably born in Gloucestershire.

HENRY MADDOX
by Tony S , Friday, November 14, 2008, 08:48 (5865 days ago) @ terry2424
Yes, your info is very relevant. I've been to the Glos Archives and looked at the record, which shows the Bride's Surname as HAINES, not JAYNES.
It would appear that Henry MADDOX married twice. First to Mary JAMES in 1840 (she died in 1842 without issue), then in Dec 1842 to Mary Ann HAINES (also nee JAMES!). Henry must have had a liking to the names Mary and James!
Mary Ann JAMES 1st marriage was to a Thomas HAINES. This marriage produced 2 children, William Haines (1839 - ?) and Thomas Haines (Apr 1841-Nov 1842). Thomas HAINES, the father, died and was buried on 29 May 1842.
Mary Ann JAMES 2nd marriage was to Henry MADDOX. This marriage produced six children: Edmund (1843), Ann (1845), George (1847), Mary (1849), Eunice (1850) and Rachel (1852).
Thanks for your info, I've learnt a lot from this exercise!
