Absentee Voters List 1918 (General)

by Speedwell_Blue, Thursday, November 13, 2008, 01:29 (5866 days ago)

Avidly following this site, so turning again for help. I'm trying to locate the service history for James Alfred Meek born 27th September 1893 in Drybrook, living Nailbridge then Cinderford. He served as a Gunner in WW1 both France and Italy, but all searches through Ancestry and elsewhere are drawing a blank. I'm told the absentee voters list often records regiment details, therefore is probably my final hope. Does anyone know where to access this or have a copy? There's information elsewhere in this site regarding his tragic death, but I'd dearly love to know his exploits through WWI as he so luckily survived.

Hoping help is out there!
Roland.

Thanks,

He was James Alfred, though had the nickname Owen. Will try the Gloucester Family History Society tomorrow too as they might know where to find the Voters list.

Got to keep looking, my dad's 78 and remembers him from when he was 5 (at the oldest!) and he's the only living link to remember!

Service records - Rufus MEEK 1889

I am interested to see this service record as Rufus Meek was my great-uncle.

I have often wondered about the war service of the members of this family. I see from these service records that Rufus was exempted from combatant service on conscientious grounds and so served in the Labour Corps.

With five brothers in the family all of serviceable age I would have expected more of them to have served even if others held similar views to Rufus over combatant service. In 1916 Tom was 40, Frank 37, Stan 29, Rufus 27 and Hubert 25.

after a lot of searching ( I'm sure the Ancestry index is challenged !)
I have found a record !

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
Name: Alfred J Meek
Regiment or Corps: Gloucestershire Regiment
Regimental number: 51942

The image is pretty much just a name and confirmation of the award of Victory medal... the search goes on

Absentee Voters List 1918

I have a copy of the absentee voter lists for Drybrook (Also Cinderford and Ruspidge). They do not contain any reference to any Regiments, etc. they only list names, brief addresses, and confirm that the man is entitled to vote and adds "Nature of Qualification" which for Services personnel is given as NM (Which I was told stands for Naval/Military). The Drybrook list includes:-
Meek Alfred Ruardean Hill, Drybrook NM. The roll of honour boards in Forest Church, listing those who served and returned, includes Alfred J. Meek in the list for Ruardean Hill.
