John and Maria Meredith 1841 census (General)
by rachellund, Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 00:43 (5893 days ago)
I really need help finding family of John Meredith, collier (c1803)and wife Maria Meredith (c1803)possibly with their children, Philip (c1829) Susanna (c1832) Enoch (c1824) Theophila (c1825) Peter (c1835) Jacob (c1832) Elizabeth (c1838)and maybe Martha (c1841). I have found record of a Maria Meredith (c1805)in Gloucester County Gaol 1841 and baptisms/births at drybrook seem to stop for a while between 1841 and 1844 so could help towards explanation. Family were resident at Winner Colliery in 1851. Appreciate any leads you could give.

Hi
Not sure if yours but there is mention of Maria Meredith in the Bristol Mercury
14/7/1838, Gloucester County Sessions-
Maria Meredith for stealing two buckets, &c at Harefield. Twelve months hard labour, 3 weeks solitary.
There is another entry for 1850, William Meredith and Maria Meredith for 6 robberies at Colebourne and other places. Got seven years.

Hi Rachel
Will communicate Meredith stuff through the Forum now you've joined, as it may be of interest to other Forest researchers.
Am "working" on the family at the moment......
Reasonably sure of:
Peter marries Eliza Prout in 1865, has at least 4 children, and dies 1880. Peter goes on to marry Henrietta Eliza Haggett in Bristol 1881.
Isabella marries David Williams in 1865, has child Amy A.....then can't find. Images on Census difficult to read in places!
Under investigation:
Susanna m John Davis
Martha m William Jordan
Phillip m Jane Puddy
Elizabeth m Thomas Jordan
Emma m Frederick Chamberlaine
Extra info in the Parish Transcripts and censuses

Thanks Bob, we have obviously been working on the same stuff over the last few days! No need for me to send you list of marriages now. If you come up with any evidence more concrete for parents of John Meredith (c1803) let us know too.

Yes, that was her birth record, haven't found any record of her being called Theophila after that. She appears as Hafflea, Afflea, Haffled and other variations in records.
Theophila Meredith

Theophila was also known as (courtesy of Robert Ryder) Haglea and Aphilia. Wonder what she called herself?!

I have continued looking at the Census images and I'm coming to the conclusion
that the enumerator missed a few remote dwellings or the sheets have been lost.
Another example :-
a near neighbour of your Meredith clan are the Turners of Nofold.

Bob, there are 2 John Meredith's, Colliers. One married Elizabeth and one married Maria, both living in Forest of Dean. Both sets of parents had Children named Philip and Isabella, could lead to confusion when looking at marriages of Philip and Isabella.

by Danny , Friday, December 19, 2008, 00:50 (5891 days ago) @ rachellund
I researched this a few years ago and concluded that john and maria were missed in 1841 because at that time Winner cabin would have been in the middle of the wood - a long walk for any enumerator. I have walked the area to where Winner cabin would have been but there are virtually no remains of the colliery or railway.
I have the children as Theophila (Afflea)16 Jul 1826, Enoch 23 Dec 1796 (died at Winner in 1875), Elizabeth 3 June 1838, Susanna and Phillip 3 Mar 1833, Jacob and Peter 8 May 1836, joseph 1839, Martha 6 June 1841, Emma 1844, Isabella 1846, Ann 1850.

Thanks Danny, I envy you having walked there, I am not in UK. I did not have Joseph, will go and check for that one again. I don't know if you read Slowhands note, that Martha 1841 was actually christened on the same day the 1841 census was taken, interesting. Do you know, is it a long walk from Drybrook to Winner? I am presuming the family would have walked there and back for christening and wondered if it was far they may have taken opportunity to visit relatives perhaps and been late back, or even slept the night out, after all it was June! missing enumerator. How do you know Enoch was killed at winner?

Thankyou slowhands! Danny, me thinks...the Joseph you have as a son of John and Maria, bpt 1839 may actually be son of John Meredith (c1799-1801, from census 1841/51) and Elizabeth (possibly Okey) (c1802-1806)as that is only record I can find of Joseph Meredith on parish records. This John was also a collier and had some children with same names as John and Maria, (Isabella, Philip and Anne that I have found so far. Please correct me if I am wrong.
