I recently received a copy of my mother's birth certificate. Her name was Rose Clarke and she was born in Littledean in 1918. Her address is shown as Water Lane End,Littledean. I have looked on maps and on the internet but have been unable to find the location. Could anyone help?

two ideas come to mind :-

Watery Lane End - which if memory serves me was more Green Bottom way

in the 1881 census "Watery Lane End" appears in the area of the Goal where Elton Road ends and Church St starts. Slough Road is mentioned and then Springfield Cottage.

Springfield Cottage is shown on an old map I have opposite the Goal.

or

Littledean lane End, near Coleford.

Thanks for that information slowhands. My mother often spoke about Littledean Gaol so I'm going to investigate more in that area.

in 1901

occupied by Thomas Clements 54 yr old miner and family
described as Water Lane End Cottage

enumerated after Prison and Pettysessional Court ( i.e. the Goal)
and before Greenway Cottage and Greenway Farm

So I can "see" the area down to a few hundred yards, just as you approach Littledean driving up from Elton corner, left hand bend, Goal appears on right, Greenway lane heads off right , after Popes Hill and Greyhound....
