I've found James bn 1819 (a 2c4r) and family in Ruspidge (1861) Leeds (1871) and his widow in Wakefield (1881), but unable to find on 1851 or 1841 census. In 1851 he would have had at least daughter Elizabeth bn 1848 East Dean as well as wife.

Nor can I find which Sarah he married, nor the Matilda his father married! - any help, please?
Cheers

James MEREDITH 1819

by reporter, Wednesday, January 07, 2009, 13:32 (5871 days ago) @ slowhands

Once again, congratulations and thanks to you, Slowhands! The original 1851 census document could indeed read "Meredith". The enumerator had a different way of marking different dwellings and families within dwellings.

My hypothesis now is that Sarah and James "married" and the name of Meredith was taken on by Elizabeth.

Now to find their "marriage" - I just wonder how prevalent co-habitation and "pretend" marriage was...........can't find anything yet on BMD or the parish records.
Cheers
Bob

James MEREDITH 1819 offspring

by reporter, Wednesday, January 07, 2009, 22:15 (5871 days ago) @ slowhands

These certainly seem like the same Merediths on the 1861, 71 and 81 census. even after being widowed Sarah was still enumerated as Meredith. Most interesting and throws a new light on this family.
Thanks Slowhands.

Emma Yearsley/Meredith went on to marry a John SHARE and the emigrated to Nanaimo Canada, whilst Edith/Alise?phoebe married a Wilfred SHARPE. Reuben married a Harriet Brown and Alfred married Emma Butterworth (they were correspondent WeeAnn's husband's GGrandparents)

Cheers
Bob

Sarah MEREDITH 1781

by waboland, Monday, January 19, 2009, 15:41 (5859 days ago) @ slowhands

Hello Searchers/FH Addicts

I am researching the MEREDITH family from Littledean. My link is through
James and Sarah's son George MEREDITH married Harriet WEBB
Children of this marriage christened Drybrook
Caroline
Josiah
Nehemiah
Rosetta
Charles
Alice

My GGGrandfather was Charles born 1841 married MAry Ann DRAISEY -moved to Stoke on Trent

I had come to the same conclusion as others- that Matilda was an error on the part of the clerk who wrote up the parish registers and that the parents of James born 1819 wshould be James and Sarah
I think Sarah's maiden name was COOPER. She is listed as a coal miner's widow in the census records
Her daughter Pheobe states her father's name was James on her marriage record.

I believe the child, William MEREDITH aged 6 years on the 1841 census, was the illegitimate son of James and Sarah's daughter Eliza
He was christened as
William Morgan MEREDITH. Eliza also had a daughter Charlotte who died aged 10 months soon after her mother
I am uncertain who James aged 10 years on the 1841 census belongs to and I ahve not found James MEREDITH christened 1819 in the 1841 census ---YET

I have some certs, photocopies of the Prs plus my own transcription of the Meredith entries for Littledean and I am happy to share them with researchers.

Can anyone tell me if the inquests for 1840 at Gloucester are extant please or if anyone has access to the local newspapers which may have a report of a death in the Bilson pit in 1840?

Good hunting

Alice MEREDITH 1844

by reporter, Tuesday, January 20, 2009, 11:15 (5858 days ago) @ slowhands

We seem to have a "hiccup" here - Alice Roseane 1844 has parents George and Maria according to her bapt transcript:

Transcript Details

Entry_Number: 387
Year: 1844
Month: Aug
Day: 4

Child_Forenames: Alice Rosanna

Mothers_Forenames: Maria

Event: Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P109 IN 1/2

Also, George Meredith appears in 1841 and 1851 census as being born 1815, but his bapt trans shows 1809.......

Any comments?

Alice MEREDITH 1844

by waboland, Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 16:26 (5857 days ago) @ reporter

Hello Bob

Thank you

Been a long search over many years to get this far.

George born 1815/6 or 1809

Marriage to Harriet WEBB in 1832 at Flaxley (photocopy)

He would have been only 16 years old and quite a few years younger than Harriet
if born in 1815/6

I suspect the ages on the census records are incorrect.
Perhaps a guess by some-one filling in the household schedule for them- neither George or Harriet signed their names on the marriage record.

I have a burial for Harriet MEREDITH in 1859- aged 57 years.

Not found George on the 1861 census unless he has remarried.

Drybrook records show George and Hannah as the parents of Caroline in 1833
another transcription gives parents as George and Harriet.
Borth cert of chalres born 1841 -mother's maiden name WEBB

All living with George's widowed mother Sarah in the 1851 census

Any help or clues much appreciated.
Perhaps there is another George lurking around the FOD in the early 1800s
Thank you
