Sarah Newton baptised Nov 1771 (General)

Looking through the Parish Records for Sarah Newton I have come across a burial record for a Sarah Newton, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth who was buried on the 22 June 1767. There is also a baptism record for a Sarah Newton, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth for the 23 Nov 1771. Was it common to give a new child the same name as a sibling who had died?

Any thoughtson this would be appreciated.

Hello.
Parents often seemed to do this, as is frequently seen in the old birth registers (my "former" life before retirement). Can create a good deal of confusion for us descendents, but a great sense of achievement when the correct ancestor is confirmed by patient research, as I'm sure you are finding.
Cheers, Celia

Hi Celia

Thanks for explaining this, it helps to clarify things as I'm a novice at researching. Your help is appreciated.
