I trying to find the parent of Joseph Winifred BALDWIN b.1865 in Gloucestershire and migrated to Victoria, Australia.
His parents are beleived to be a William BALDWIN & Winifred UNKNOWN.
This is not my direct line but is an associated family through marriage.
My brickwall is my great great grandfather, William James BALDWIN who migrated to New Zealand arriving on the Stately in 1851. This ship sailed from London on 27th January, 1851 and arrived in Auckland on the 1st June 1851.
WJB's NZ marriage certificate doesn't show his patents details but his death certificate shows his father's name as James BALDWIN. He is beleived to have an agricultural labourer.
Any help on the above gentleman would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Greg
Joseph Winifred Baldwin baptised 25 Dec 1864 Drybrook, was the son of Winifred Baldwin 1840/1867, his father was William Marfell born 23 Aug 1865, baptised 27 Dec 1835. They never married. William Marfell married Elizabeth Hartland 29 Jul 1869. Winifred Baldwin married Richard Sadler 1866.
As Slowhands has rightly surmised, Winifred was the daughter of William Baldwin & Hannah Smart. William & Hannah married 19 April 1823 Hope Mansell and had 12 children. Winifred’s sister Charlotte married Henry Sadler, brother of the Richard she eventually married. Winifred’s brother James (manager of Slad Pit) married twice, his second to Sophia Ann Morgan produced 9 children, including Ivo William Baldwin a Mining Engineer and Colliery owner, whose name appeared on the side of mineral railway wagons, reproduced as model versions. I believe there is a picture on this site.
Joseph Winifred Baldwin married Mary Jane Clayton 13 Sep 1890. I have the marriage certificate. They had 12 children. I have details of all. He died 27 Apr 1916 Boolara, Victoria, Australia. Buried 30 Apr 1916.
I have 23 William Baldwin’s in my family tree but the only one of an appropriate age to have emigrated in 1851, that had a father James, is the William Baldwin who married Hannah Smart and he was on the 1851 census in UK, and I believe died in 1861.

My name is Dan Baldwin and I have traced my family tree back to Joseph Winifred Baldwin and hence his mother Winifred Baldwin who was the daughter of William Baldwin & Hannah Smart as per your message. Did you ever find out the father of William Baldwin. Would appreciate if you could assist.

Your posting may help both of us. There are a number of appropriate William Baldwin's if you accept a variety of spellings. I favour his parents as being James Baldwin & Margaret Turner, but it could be Thomas Baldwin & Elizabeth Jackson.
I will await developments with you.

Sorry I have taken so long to reply to you but there have been a number of reasons. Firstly I have been experiencing a very frustrating time tryin to track down ny mother's father. Mum is in her nineties and her husband was Edward Christensen (Ned or Ted)Baldwin who you know was one of the sons of Joseph Winifred Baldwin. The task has become bigger that what I thought even though I have a last name and the Victorian town where he lived and what he did for a living. Secondly you have given me a bit of dilemna when you advised that Joseph's father was William Marfell. Is it normal protocul in family trees to go back on the male side of the family, if it is then I should be going back on the Marfells. My youngest son Stephen Baldwin has always has this romantic theme (not documented)that our Baldwin family tree goes all the way back to the times of William the Conquerer. I think that I have shattered his romantic beliefs. Perhaps I could go back on both sides to partially appease my sons beliefs. What do you think? Fourthly, I am concerned that if I go back on both sides the financial burden may be too great. From your own experiences what would be your opinion? Finally, it is surprising when talking to people the number of them that are aware of the Forest of Dean Family History facility. All speak very highly of the site and the place in Gloustershire which they have been very lucky to visit. I would like to visit the facility but as I am retired I can not see myself being able to afford it at the moment. Do they have a research service within the facility which you can pay for. Even if you yourself have documentation that may be of assistance to me I would be really grateful for any copies and would of course have to pay you for all costs incurred by yourself.

Which lines of ancestor you follow is up to you, there is no "standard". In this case it is especially confusing as William Marfell & Winifred Baldwin were not actually married. Winifred then had a child Frederick George Baldwin 1862 baptised 7 Feb 1864 with Reuben Meredith 1844/1924 who she also did not marry. She went on to marry Richard Sadler born 1843 in 1866. When Winifred died in 1867, Richard Sadler went on to marry Jane Baldwin 29 Nov 1868 Cinderford - here you might get confused, the fathers of Winifred & Jane Baldwin were William Baldwin & mother Hannah - Winifred's parents William Baldwin 1798/1861 mother Hannah Smart 1800/1872, Jane's parents William Baldwin 1779/1863 & mother Hannah Bailey 1789/1863. Jane was a widow at marriage, her previous spouse John Shaw 1844, they married 20 Oct 1845 Sellack, Herefordshire 4 children.
I have a copy of the marriage entry for Joseph Winifred Baldwin 1864/1916 & Mary Jane Clayton 30 Sep 1866/3 Jun 1949 Melbourne they married 13 Sep 1890 at Melbourne. William Marfell is shown as the father, but this is not a guarantee that he was, I have a number of marriage certificates where an illegitimate person shows a father that is not actually the father. In one instance on a birth certificate - a Marfell -I have a copy of the original birth certificate without a father and copy of a forged one, used to enter the USA showing a father that was actually his grandfather. If you email me using the envelope icon link, I can send you a copy of Joseph Winifred Baldwin's marriage certificate.
If you are interested in the William Marfell line, he was born 23 Aug 1835 Drybrook baptised 27 Dec 1835 Drybrook, died 6 Dec 1899 buried 16 Dec 1899 Drybrook.
He was not married to Winifred Baldwin. He did marry Widow Elizabeth Davies nee Hartland 29 Jul 1869, she had previously been married to Philip Davies born 1811 at Lea Church 3 Jan 1830. She seems to change her age at nearly every census.
William Marfell was the son of Aaron Marfell 1811/1873 & Sarah Constance 1808/1879 - 11 children. Aaron Marfell son of John Marfell 1769/1840 & Sarah Constance Bevan 1777/1814 2 children. John Marfell 1769 son of John Marfell 1731/1799 & Lucy Meek 1743/1823 12 children. John Marfell 1731 son of Jonathon Marfell 1707/1782 & Susan Bennett 1707/1782. I can go back many more generations but will stop here.
I used the records office a great deal in the early days of my research, but I think now you can find nearly as much information using the internet, especially this wonderful site.

Thank you for your wise counsel as I am only a new boy on the block in this field. I appreciate your kind offer of my grandfather's (Joseph Winifred Baldwin) marriage certificate but I have already obtained a copy. A little funny observation by myself. When wandering back through time I have found it interesting where parents have passed on christain names and middle names to this fieldeir children. A very good friend of mine (we were in the RAAF together) called Jim got me interested in my family background and now I am speaking to another Jim who has great knowledge in this field. How ironic.
Kind regards
