Any pictures or stories of Hewelsfield (General)

by Griff, (6165 days ago)

Calling anyone out there who have any pictures or stories relating to the people of Hewelsfield?
A lot of my ancesters ( The Jones's) lived in Hewelsfield and my mother grew up in a little cottage called 'Clifton Cottage'. Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks Griff.

Seem to remember Hewelsfield as a small village

In 1956 when I was 12 I stayed in St Briavels for the summer with my Aunt. Ruby Lewis. I used to take my cousin jean's Baby Jimmy for long walks in his pushchair. There were two routes to go. One around the road and a shorter route through a wood down a very steep hill.

My aim was to get to the tiny shop in Hewelsfield where I would spend the money we were given to buy some sweets for the journey back. Is my recollection correct in identifying the village as Hewelsfield? I think so as it is a very vivid memory. Joy Marchant

Hi Joy

I was brought up in the Hewelsfield/St Briavels area during the 1950's and we did a lot of walking in those days, but I am struggling to remember the route through the Wood that you are talking about. There was a Shop at Coldharbour on the way to St Briavels and Hewelsfield Commons. There was another Shop, The Triangle Stores on the Hewelsfield to Brockweir Road and 2 down in Brockweir. a Post Office on the same Road, but nearer Hewelsfield Cross Roads. I don't think there were any Shops near Hewelsfield Church. If you could give me any Landmarks that you passed I might be able to work out which Shop it was.

Regards, Alison
