Military Hospital (General)

by honey, Saturday, February 14, 2009, 05:09 (5834 days ago)

Could any one help? I am researching a family member who died of TB in November 1923. His death certificate states Sedbury Tidenham RD. His Wife who was the informant gave Sedbury Tidenham as her residence. Dr T L Drapes certified. I cannot find a sanatorium in the Sedbury area other than perhaps the military hospital? His name was Arthur Stewart Honey, a saddler by occupation who only returned from the war in 1919.

I really would be grateful for any help with this. Many thanks

Beachley land was taken over to become shipyards in WWI, later the Army Apprentice college; there was a manor at Beachley.

The Marling family held Sedbury Park at the time of WWI and also had military connections.

Would not be surprised to find a small "ward" or hospital at either.

TB was far more common then , often found as Consumption on death certs; he may not have been in isolation or a care setting

If the death cert states Sedbury Tidenham RD, that would mean the village of Sedbury in Tidenham Rural District, which still, incidentally comes under Tidenham Parish.
I don't know of any Military Hospital at Sedbury, then or now, except there was a small camp there, so maybe there was a small hospital attached.
It might pay you to contact the local museum?

Hello honey
I can help a little perhaps but since I was reminded a while ago that this list is for Glos searches only, I would be transgressing again. :-) Perhaps you would mail me?

this list is for Glos searches only

I will just clarify the situation of the area we cover as many parts of Gloucestershire are not covered.

In the guidelines Please read before posting a message you will find the following.

Only post messages relating to people and places connected in some way to the Forest of Dean or near by bordering places. Like the name of this Web site indicates, we specialise in the area of the Forest of Dean.

In general it is in the area that lies between the Wye and Severn rivers as slowhands has already mentioned.

Honey,
Having looked it up, I can see that Sedbury is most certainly in the county of Gloucestershire.
Sedbury is in the Parish of Tidenham. Tidenham was ONCE a part of the Forest of Dean but is now no longer classed as such.
So, as this site is a Forest of Dean one, then maybe that's what was meant by Sedbury not being covered.

Skippy

Tidenham is very much considered a parish in the Forest of Dean.

The defn. of Forest may mean different things to different folk :-)

Do we take a very limited view and take part of the "Free Miner" approach and only accept those who lived in the Hundred of St Briavels - Should we ignore those living in the Hundreds of Bledisloe or Greytree ?

or, do we say "Only those BMD's registered in Westbury on Severn - Should we ignore those from Chepstow, Ross , Monmouth, and Newent ?

Broadly west of the Severn and Gloucestershire; there is no hard and fast "boundary" for this board, just apply some common sense. i.e. if the family you are interested came from Mid Wales , Kent or Lancashire , and you have no linkage to this area then you are probably best contacting a Forum that specialises in that area , or a general family History forum.

We generally try to help but our expertise / knowledge is in this core area and the further away the less the detailed knowledge we have.

Slowhands,
Please accept my sincere apologies.
I was searching on-line to find the boundaries of the Forest of Dean, and have obviously found some duff information!!

P.S. In which case, with respect, I don't understand the meaning of 'Admin's' post.

Honey

My late father lived in Sedbury and the postal address is Chepstow, Monmouthshire.

Having lived on the borders for 70 yrs, I feel it is in your interest to contact me but I leave it up to you. :-))

This is an excellent list and I wish to cause no problems.

Sorry Admin.

Tidenham Parish is situated in the South-West Corner of Gloucestershire, within the Royal Forest of Dean District Council Area. Tidenham is the fifth largest settlement in the District, (after the four towns of Lydney, Coleford, Cinderford and Newent). The Parish is bordered by the River Wye to the West, which is also the Welsh border. There are four bridges across the Wye in or near the Parish; the Old Bridge and the New Bridge (A48) connect Tutshill to the town of Chepstow, the M48 Wye Bridge is not accessible from the parish even though it passes over the parish! The fourth is a footbridge (former railway bridge) just outside the Parish across to Tintern. Tidenham is bordered by the River Severn in the East the only bridge on this side is the M48 Old Severn Bridge

Tidenham Parish includes a number of distinct settlements, Beachley, Sedbury, Tutshill, Woodcroft, Tidenham, Boughspring, Stroat (including Wibdon) and Tidenham Chase. The Parish has a total area of 34km² of which 5km² are estuary. The highest point is in Clayton Woods on Tidenham Chase, 237m above sea level. The parish is 12km from North (Beech Knoll, 51° 43.5’N) to South (Confluence of Severn and Wye streams, 51° 36’N) and 6.5km from West (River Wye at Lancaut, 2° 40’W) to East (Beacon Sands in the River Severn, 2° 35’W).

All but a handful of properties in the parish fall within the NP (Newport) Royal Mail postcode area and receive postal deliveries from Chepstow sorting office. Parts of some other parishes along the Wye Valley also have NP postcodes. The remainder of the Parish falls within the GL (Gloucester) postcode area. A number of examples of confusion arising from government and commercial organisations interpreting an NP postcode and Chepstow address as inferring that people live in Wales have arisen over the years.

In 2002 the Parish held a Poll, requesting Royal Mail to act to change the postcode. Royal Mail has done nothing since the Poll was concluded.

All properties in the Parish have Chepstow exchange telephone numbers. A number of complaints result from this in particular with regard to the speed of response to emergency 999/911 calls, which have to be diverted from Cwmbran to Gloucester, in particular for Police. The police are aware of the issue but believe that it does not impact upon their ability to respond.

Policing is provided by the Gloucestershire Constabulary, the police station in Tutshill is not used on a regular basis. The Forest Bobby bus does make regular visits to a number of locations within the parish.

Fire and rescue services are provided by the Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, which has a base in Lydney, additional assistance is also provided by the Monmouthshire service which has a base in Chepstow.

Ambulance services are more usually provided by the Wales Ambulance Trust although both the Gloucestershire and Avon Trusts can also provide services, depending upon the hospital being attended.

There is a problem in that the Forest of Dean District Council covers areas that no right minded Forester woukd accept as being in the Forest of Dean . The village that instantly comes to mind (because FoD planning office once argued with me about it) is Bromsberrow Heath , on the edge of the Malverns

A search for the Forest of Dean may well bring up these administrative boundaries rather than the accepted area

Never forget there is a national boundary here between England and Wales. The definition "twixt Wye and Severn" is incorrect since of course there is a part of Monmouthshire in Wales which is east of the Wye north of Redbrook.
