In 1814 the Lydney forges were leased to John James, who in the early 1820s
built a new forge called New Mills roughly half way between Upper forge and Middle forge.
By 1844 James was using Lower forge as a tinplating works.

Thank you for all the information. As I am new to family tree research , could you explain how you make the connection from Siar to Lovell? I have heard of alias's but not how they work.
It puzzles me that if they took the name Lovell around 1837 why did they revert to Siar on the marriage certificate of Sarah and JJ Davies 1853.
Also Charlotte Siah born c1834 in Lydney, Sarah's sister, is not mentioned on any of the subsequent census.
Thanks again Dennie

This is the correct Sarah who married my G G granfather John Jenkin Davies at the parish church Bushbury 1853( I have obtained the marriage certificate),George her father was alive at the time, but I can still find no reference to the Siar (SiaH) family in any of the census on line.
Does anyone have access to the Bushbury and district census 1841/1851, to help me in my search. Maybe the name is misspelt.
Any thoughts appreciated
regards Dennie.

Who are you looking for ? I'm sure we have a possible for Sarah in South Wales in 1841 and Swan Garden, Wolverhampton in 1851 not far from Bushbury. For some reason post 1837 the family is using LOVELL as its surname .....

Perhaps the Marriage Certificate would yield more clues i.e. address where Sarah was living on her marriage, occupation of her father George, and witness names. My x Grandfather reverted to his mother's maiden name on the last two census returns of his and his wife's lives. I cannot find any other options on Ancestry from 1841 onwards.

Thank you for your help.
I have the marriage certificate, the address on it is just Bushbury, the witnesses are Mary Jarrett and Richard Holding. Richard is John Jenkin Davies's brother in law, and Mary is the aunt of Sarah Siar. George Siar is stated as being a Furnace man at the time of the wedding.
I am trying to locate the family Siar before Sarah and John married. The Davies family are living in Sedgley Wolverhampton 1841.
Thanks again Regards Dennie

I think you will find this is the family - living a few hundred yards away from Bushbury in Swan Gardens.
1851 Swan Gardens
George Lovell abt 1817 Saul, Gloucestershire, England Head Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Sarah Lovell abt 1815 Lydney, Gloucestershire, England Wife Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Eliza Lovell abt 1843 Taeforist, Glamorgan, Wales Daughter Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
Sarah Lovell abt 1835 Lydney, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
William Lovell abt 1846 Upper Mitton, Worcestershire, England Son Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
The area has Iron works at Swan Gardens and Shrubbery.

And a near Forest link as people from Swan Gardens Works moved to work at the new Lysaght steelworks in Newport, South Wales.
Why is that name important ?
Because Chepstow castle was bought by businessman William Royse Lysaght, of Tutshill - - another interesting link between the Forest of Dean and the Black Country.
Some may remember the Lysaght's at Castleford Hill, opposite Mopla Rd, Tutshill.

I am not sure if this is the answer - but I think it is worth looking at.
On the 1861 census, 'Slowhands' has kindly put on this site - George Lovell and his wife Sarah have a family including William Lovell age 15, born Worcester, Stourport and George age 9 born Stafford.
Your family are on the 1871 census in Warrington (already on the FOD site)
On the 1871 census for Staffordshire, George LOVELL is aged 62 (tin worker) widowed born Saul.
However, I have found on the 1871 census in Warrington (listed on Ancestry.com as LYAS) two brothers :
boarding
William SYAR - unmarried age 25 - Iron Worker Forge Roller - born Worcester, Stourport - and George SYAR - age 20 - Iron Worker Puddle - born Stafford Wolverhampton. More work to be done here !!!!
Sarah SIAR born c1835 Lydney

Looking again at the 1871 census in Warrington : 'FINKIN DAVIES' and family (as per Slowhands) is on page 25 in the Parish of St Paul's and the two brothers listed as LYAS, but look like SYAR are on the page before i.e. page 24 - so I think this could be her brothers.
Sarah SIAR born c1835 Lydney

I think this may hopefully be of use
1871 census, Warrington - District St Paul page 24
Thomas BURTON - Head age 31, Iron Worker - Metal ......born Fradswell, Staffordshire
Eliza - wife - age 27 born New Bridge Glamorganshire
Thomas BURTON married Eliza SIRE - June 1864
So I think this is Sarah's, William's and Thomas - sister
William - Son age 5 Scholar, born Lancashire, Warrington
Thomas - Son age 4 born 'ditto'
Ceclia - Daughter age 2 - ditto
and then we have
William SYAR - Boarder - unmarried age 25 Iron Worker Forge Roller born Worcs Stourport
George SYAR - Boarder - unmarried age 20 ditto - Puddle, born Stafford, Wolverhampton
George SIAH LOVELL 1851 Wolverhampton

George SIAH LOVELL 1851 Wolverhampton
by cortina1970, Wednesday, January 13, 2010, 22:56 (5500 days ago) @ slowhands
Hi, I am part of the Syers family up here in Warrington, The family tree for the Syers family was done for us in the 1980's, I still have a copy somewhere.
The reason for the name change, and this is what I am led to believe , not only from the genealogist, but word of mouth from family members, is that the family were became travellers (gypsies) from the Gloucester area, they moved up to Warrington , iron and wireworks being the main trade of the town, the name Lovell was a Gypsy name, and as such, with gypsies having a bad reputation, and being unemployable, when asked his name George said 'It is George, sire', sire meaning 'sir', this was then taken that his name was George Siah, and when the census was performed, it was duly filled as Siah, this was most likely done by a canvasser calling at the door to fill in uncompleted censuses.
Since the name stuck, the name was used when registering births / marriages etc, but then spelt Syre, this has later evolved to Syers.
As they came from Gypsy background, the family could not read / write, so the spelling of the name was left to the registrar of the day.
As a footnote, there has always been a George Henry in the family, handed out from generation to generation...in fact, George Henry Syers was Warrington Mayor in 1990.
Most of this is word of mouth, passed through the years, so may not be 100%, but it is as the family understands it.

Hi magnusnasus,
any information you have would be great.
Sarah married John Jenkin Davies Feb. 1853 Bushbury Stafford. I have their marriage certificate and would be pleased to forward a copy.
They are my great, great grandparents.
I know her parents were George Siar and Sarah Jarrett but have no knowledge of George before 1834 marriage.

Has anybody noticed that Herbert Davies, born 1857 at Dudley Staffs, the son of Jenkin Davies (aka John Jenkin Davies) and his wife (Sarah, whateven her maiden name was) is shown on the 1881 census living as a lodger at 19 Lloyd Street Warrington in the home of Henry Sear, 26, an iron puddlier and his family, his wife Mary A 21 and daughter Sarah aged 3, born Warrington. The birth records on FreeBMD for that daughter Sarah Sear show she was born March qtr 1878 at Warrington (8c/213) In the 1891 cessus she was 13 and was still with her family (spelled on the census as Syres) then in 1901 she was 23 and married to John Thomas Fritchett 23, born Warrington, and the marriage record for them shows they married at Warrington December qtr 1897 (8c/258) and Sarah died at Warrington March qtr 1960 (10f/777) We also found a marriage record for Jenkin Davies (which are the only names we found on his baptism, no John, just plain Jenkin) showing his marriage in 1853 at Penkridge to either a Sarah Martin or Sarah Sear (vol/page 4b/423). We also note that in the census of 1841 and 1851 when Jenkin is with his parents (Jenkin Davies and Sarah nee Keeling) he is always shown just as Jenkin, and in the census of 1861 he is just plain Jenkin with his wife Sarah at Swan Gardens Wolverhampton. Then in 1871 census he has become Finkin, and his son Jenkin is also shown as Finkin. The 1881 census shows him again as Jenkin, as does the 1891 census, so it appears the only place he is referred to as John Jenkin Davies is on his marriage record on FreeBMD, and never on the census before of after his marriage.
The children of Jenkin and Sarah that we have found are Christiana born 1853.Herbert born 1857, Florence born 1859, Jenkin born abt 1863, but no birth record found so far, Alice 1866, Fanny 1874, Sarah Ellen born 1880
we also looked for found a marriage for the son Herbert to a lady named Ann, as shown on the census from 1891, and the marriage record for him to Ann shows his name as Herbert Inkerman Davies, so unsure if this is even the same man as this second name Inkerman had not been used previously nor again after the marriage
we hope somebody is able to help us with some info, and that our contribution can help others, but my wife is related to the Keeling family of Sarah (married Jenkin Davies at Sedgley Staffordsgure 13th february 1820), and we have been researching the Keeling family for more than 50 years, a labour of love and even after all those years, still a work in progress. best wishes from Australia from us 2 Aussies.
