Is this in fact Alfred Yearsley - mother was Sarah Yearsley and father (presumed, as he lived with her and the family!) was James Meredith? No marriage has yet been found of Sarah and James - do you perhaps have details? I have Alfred married to Emma Butterworth in 1886, and four children:
Sarah Elizabeth 1887 who married Herbert Hepworth
Joseph 1890 m Helen Russell and Alice Whittaker
Edith 1896 m Arthur Smith
Alfred m Clarice Grant

Alfred Yearsley/Meredith was a 2nd cousin of mine via Mary Ann Meredith.

Matilda is on the bapt record of son James 1819 but no Matilda can be found. The most likely candidate is Sarah Cooper. A James who married a Margaret Lewis in 1815 appears to have lived in Herefordshire.

I wish to apologise for the errors in my post submitted last night. My husbands grandfather was not married to Emma BUTTERWORTH - she was his mother. Clive shares a great grandfather with you.
Best regards
Ann

Hello Phillip,
This is my second try at sending this to you. I'm sure it didn't work the first time!
My husband CLIVE BENTLEY is the grandson of JOSEPH MEREDITH and EMMA BUTTERWORTH so shares a grandfather with you.
We have been researching the family for some time, and have quite a lot of information, although it is not straightforward by any means.
We have tried to solve the Meredith/Yearsley mystery, but I think have only managed to confuse ourselves even more.
It would seem that James and Sarah lived together for ever, but whether they were ever married or not is anybody's guess. It seemed to us that the lynch pin so to speak was REUBEN, as he was their firstborn Well! We think he was!and was registered as MEREDITH. We didn't think that ELIZABETH was James' daughter, but of course we could be wrong on that. Anyway we sent for REUBEN's b.c. and - Great! It said Father JAMES MEREDITH - Mother SARAH MEREDITH formerly YEARSLEY. That sounded to us like a marriage had taken place, (although we could find no record). We then sent for ALFRED's b.c. and lo and behold, no mention of JAMES at all and he was registered as YEARSLEY, as are all the offspring in between.
By the time of the 1881 census the family have moved to Morley, and are living at Balaclave Terrace, and all styling themselves as MEREDITH.
I have no doubt we have the right family, and have purchased several b.c and d.c., including those of EMMA CARR, if you would like us to forward copies of these to you(jpg files) it would be no trouble.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Best regards
Ann
