One way to find where your ancestors lived is:-

Look at the Enumerator's Route (i.e. Enumeration District) in this Case

Part of the Civil Parish of Newland in the Tything of Clearwell comprising, Millend, Scatterford, Caudwell, Part of Wicket Green, Stow, Lougney, Shophouse, Stan(r) Lane, Clearwell to Upper Cross, The Court and Slatwell.

Looking from Page 1: Millend, Scatterford Road, Clearwell Road, Stow Lane, Stan(r) Lane, Clearwell Road, Iron? House, Clearwell Road, Lamb Inn, Clearwell Road (inc Nailer Arms) - Clearwell Road, Wyndham Arms, Clearwell Road, St Peters School, The Vicarage, Court Lodge to Court House.

'Slowhands' also gave an old map link 2 April 2009 (under Piccadilly in High Woolaston)

I've had a look at a useful site for old maps etc.

BRITISH HISTORY ON LINE

clicked on Maps and searched for Clearwell (Map dated 1891)

The Wynham Arms is on there as is The Vicarage (you can zoom) - it's just to the right of centre - and almost at the top of the map - so Nailers Arms was close - may be just off the map

Tony

Information about The Nailers Arms on the following Web Page

http://www.easywell.co.uk/pubs/publist/gl14-17-ch-coa.htm

The Nailers Arms was about 200 yrds from the Miners Arms at Sling on the Main Road going through to Coleford, it is now a group of Terraced Houses known locally as the Burnt Houses. All of this area (now known as Sling) was part of Clearwell Meend.

I lived in Sling for 27 yrs, if you have any more queries please ask.

Regards, Alison
