George Morris MORSE 1815 Lydney / Blakeney /Yorkley area (General)

by Denise Thompson, Monday, May 04, 2009, 18:04 (5755 days ago)

Hello Listers,
I am trying to establish a possible family link between the Morse family of Lydney/ Blakeney/ Yorkley and my Morse family of Lydbrook/ Ruardean/ Welsh Bicknor.I suspect that those family members who owned shares in coal mines from both families may have been related.
Henry and Elizabeth Morse had eight children from 1740 to 1762, at least seven of them baptised at Welsh Bicknor. My direct ancestor Amelia Morse, one of these eight children married John Cook, and this family has been mentioned on another thread of this website.
George Morse, a son of Henry and Elizabeth and brother of Amelia, lived in Lydbrook, had interests in coalmines and was also a barge owner. He was one of the original members of the Company of Proprietors of the Rivers Wye and Lugg Navigation and Horse Towing-path which was constructed between Lydbrook and Hereford in about 1811. George Morse died in 1812.
I am not at present seeking further information on my Morse family, but am very keen to learn whether they had cousins or uncles in Lydney/ Blakeney/ Yorkley.
Regards and thanks,
Denise

Hello slowhands,
Thank you for your reply. I do have the information previously posted on my Morse family. My hope is that a Morse researcher may be able to provide a link, if one exists, between the Lydney/Yorkley/Blakeney family and mine in Lydbrook/Ruardean/Welsh Bicknor. Such information might help me to confirm the names of earlier generations of my ancestors.
Regards,
Denise

Hi Denise,

We are very loosely related and I have my family tree on ancestry.com under the gifford family tree.

I gleaned a lot of my information from a lady called Janet Rigby, who is a descendant of Phoebe Morse, you may or may not have been in contact with her. She had a huge Family tree website, that may give you the information you are seeking. She also has a family tree on Ancestry, I think her userid is charlierigby.

Our Family connection is through my great great grandfather who married Phoebe Morse.

hope this will give yo uthe leads you are after.

Good luck

Sarah

from the Archives

Michael Blackwell in March 2000 left a message on here about the Morse family who owned coal deposits in Forest of Dean. I tried to e-mail him but address was unknown. I am researching George Morse born 1758 Awre with Blakeney. His will dated 1829 makes bequests to his sons, some of which are part shares in collieries, the Grove Engine Colliery at Whitecroft, coal work at Parkend called Catch Can and coal work at Speedwell, near Branducks Green. He was married to Elizabeth Davies. George was the son of John Morse and Margaret.

Dear Sarah and Slowhands,
Thank you very much for your assistance. I will certainly take a look at your Ancestry submission Sarah, and will also contact Janet Rigby.
The New Zealand website Paperspast has two references to George Morris Morse, and many for the Morse surname.
Regards,
Denise
