Mary Brain (Rickards/Richards) 1839 (General)
I am trying to trace my g.grandmother Mary Brain. I have found her birth registration on the Ancestry site and she is listed as BRAIN Mary Rickards in July to Sep 1839. On the family search site her baptism is shown as Mary Richards Brain 8 Sep 1839 at Lydney, mother Sarah Brain, on the FOD site the baptism is recorded as Mary Rickards 8 Sep 1839 mother Sarah, does anyone know where I can find the orginal Baptism entry. I know Sarah Brain married a George Rickards on 5 Oct 1839.

I think this is a "phantom" index entry
Name: Mary Rickards Brain
Year of Registration: 1839
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Chepstow
County: Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire
Volume: 26
Page: 62
where as this is the real entry
Name: Mary Rickards Rickards
Year of Registration: 1839
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Chepstow
County: Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire
Volume: 26
Page: 62
If you have access to the images check them out.
If it is a phantom its probably a submission by a researcher.

Mary RICKARDS - BRAIN 1839 Lydney

Have had a look at the images, and I am more confused than I was befor. I have also checked it out on the Family Search site and they show the baptism as Mary Richards Brain, with mother as Sarah Brain, there info was taken from film supplied by Gloucestershrie Records. Is it possable that the transcriber for the FOD still has a copy of the original entry that I could have a look at. I know on all the Census forms she is shown as Rickards or variations of the name. The only other option I have is to send for the Birth Certificate.
Many thanks for your help

In looking at the record on the Family Search website it states the record as being Mary Richards BRAIN. If you dig a little deeper It also states, Extracted from microfilm copies of parish registers and bishop's transcripts
At a guess the IGI entry was taken from the Bishops Transcripts which often differs from the parish records from which our record was transcribed from and lists her as Mary RICKARDS
As our transcripts for this record were taken from microfiche so we would not be able to send you a copy of the entry. There does not however appear to be any reason to suggest that the record has been transcribed by us incorrectly.
You must remember that things were a lot different in that period of time to what they are today. It was very common then to see these type of differences on records.
Personally I would not be concerned with the differences you see on the records as everything points to Mary RICKARDS as being the daughter of George RICKARDS and Sarah BRAIN but to satisfy your own mind send for the birth certificate if you wish.

Thanks admin for your help, the reason I'm trying to confirm her name is that I think she was the mother of my Grandfather who was a BRAIN (with no father named) so will have to keep looking.
Many thanks for all your help.

From the transcriptions on this site I'm 90% sure she was BAPTISED as RICKARDS - her mother a BRAIN married a RICKARDS shortly after, and we have to assume she became known as RICKARDS-BRAIN.
